Donna followed the smell of eggs and bacon into the TARDIS kitchen, blinking sleepily as she entered. The Doctor turned with a grin, "Ah, there you are. Breakfast's almost ready!"

"Mmm, smells good. What's the occasion? Oh!" Donna said as she saw the large heart-shaped box on the table by her chair.

"Happy Valentine's Day!" he said, setting her plate on the table before sliding his arms around her waist.

"Oh, you should have said – I'd have got you something."

"I don't need anything, I've got you." He kissed her forehead, then her nose, then her lips, and she sighed against him, pulling him closer.

"You're so sentimental," she said. "Must be one of the things I love about you."

He laughed. "Must be. Best eat before it gets cold. I've got a full day planned for us."

"Have you really?" Donna took a seat. "I hope those are chocolates in that box," she said, nodding at the heart-shaped box.

"The best anywhere, of course," he replied, taking his own seat and tucking into his breakfast. "But this is only the beginning." He grinned at her, his eyebrows lifted.

"Alright then – what weather should I dress for?"

* * *

"Well, Spaceman, you've certainly outdone yourself. Breakfast, chocolates, a picnic lunch, a walk on the beach – what could possibly be next?" Donna asked as they walked, hand in hand. They came up over a hill, and found a blanket spread on the ground, and the Doctor stopped with a grin. Letting go of her hand, he sat on the blanket and grinned up at her.

"Oh, you'll see, don't worry." He patted the spot next to him on the blanket, then stretched out, his ankles crossed and his hands behind his head.

Donna sat down next to him, stretching out her legs and leaning back on her arms. Dusk was falling, and she could see the stars beginning to emerge in the night sky. A cool breeze stirred the grass around them on the hillside. If she didn't know a thriving city lay on the other side of it she would have believed they had the planet to themselves.

"Wait for it," he said cryptically, and Donna lay down next to him, resting her head on his chest. He dropped his hand around her shoulder, and she could feel his fingers making small circles on her exposed skin.

"Wait for what?"

"That," he said as fireworks exploded in the sky overhead. More colours than she could have imagined burst in brilliant patterns, filling the sky with light. She gasped, and his arm tightened around her.

Donna gasped, "It's beautiful!"

She heard his laughter rumble in his chest. "Thought you'd like it," he said.

"I love it."

The patterns kept changing, each set flowing into the next one, colours blending together, until finally a huge red rocket burst into a heart shape, followed by several smaller ones that spelled out "Donna."

She watched as the sparks faded, then propped herself up to look at him. He was watching her with intensity, his eyes dark as he waited for her to say something. "You—" she started, then stopped as her voice gave out. She tried again. "You wrote my name in the stars."

He nodded, and cupped her face with his hand. "It's always been there. I wanted you to see. Happy Valentine's Day."

She leaned down to kiss him thoroughly. "I love you."

He rolled her onto her back, his hands skimming over her sides. "I love you, Donna Noble," he said, as she pulled him down for another kiss.
