Grant Douglas Ward was not a believer. He did not believe in a God. He simply believed in science and nothing of that religion or mythological sort. He never believed in God. Not even when he was little. What was the point? He could pray and pray and his suffering would never end, so he decided to pull himself away from the belief shared by most of the Earth's population.

When he hears Coulson screaming out Simmons' name, he immediately rushes to him.

He finds Coulson holding Skye straight up and he couldn't even process what she looked like until the rest of the team came in. She was so pale, ghostly almost. He thinks that he's never seen so much blood before (even though he obviously has). For the first time in a while, he doesn't know what to do.

One of the nurses in charge of Skye's recovery comes out and the mood is suddenly dreary. They all exchanged worried glances and Coulson took a deep breath.

"How is she?" He asks.

"Not good. The shots perforated her stomach and penetrated the large and small intestines. We resected what we could but there's been too much damage."

"So what's next?"

"We can keep her comfortable, but you'll need to make a decision on whether or not you want to keep her on life support."

With those last two words, everybody's world seemed to crash.

Ward was speechless. He kept his eyes on the nurse, not knowing what to do.

Skye was dying and there was nothing to do.

That night, he wants to cry and he doesn't know why.

He finds himself praying to a God he doesn't believe exists and he curses himself for not being there to protect her and he thinks, if he was there, she would be alive and breathing and beating him at Battleship. But no, she's in the medical pod, just hanging on a thread.

He prays and prays and prays until he believes that he's prayed more than anybody else has because Skye has to be safe. She has to be alive, or he wouldn't be able to live with it.
