Ed stared blankly up in the general direction of the ceiling, though he couldn't see it in the thick darkness. He blinked and tears spilled out of his eyes, trickling slowly down to his ear, then making their way to his loose hair.

It wasn't as if he didn't know this would happen someday.

Eventually.

Wasn't that always the way of it?

In the end everyone always seemed to leave him.

His father, who had thought he was helping by leaving.

His mother, who had believed she was being strong by keeping her illness to herself.

Alphonse, who sacrificed himself to save an older brother who didn't deserve it.

Alfons... who had taught him how to reach for the stars with his rockets.

Ed turned and gently ran his hand along the sheets. He'd been here, not too long ago, just a few days ago, he'd been here...

But now he'd never be here again.

Ed buried his face into a pillow that didn't belong to him, clenched his fists around sheets he hadn't used, covered himself in a blanket that had sheltered them both through the night so many times before, and cried.
