This story is a rewrite of the first ever Charmed fanfic (and fanfic in general) that I wrote and published onto this site. That was just over 6 years ago now, which is mad. Even though I am rewriting Destinies, the story is the same; just better (hopefully). If you were one of the 16,000 people (yes, I know, that's mental) that read the original Destinies, feel free to give this a miss, although, if it's been a while, maybe you'll enjoy reading a newer and better version of it? I managed to triple the word count of the first chapter alone with this version, woo!
I really hope you enjoy reading this.
Chapter One: The Mourning After
This story starts, as most do, with a death. And this death was not any old death: it was a death that rewrote the destinies and future of five very important women. One woman affected, of course, was the woman whose death we are talking about. Her name: Prue Halliwell. Another woman affected is barely a teenager, but she does not come into this story just yet. Her name is not yet important, and although her destiny has already been rewritten, the effects have not yet come into play in her life. The remaining three, as you may have guessed if you are aware of the Halliwell's story, were the sisters of Prue Halliwell. Their names: Piper, Phoebe and Paige.
The early hours of a late-May day are when this story begins, and although it is not a long one, as it barely lasts a week, it is a story that has been passed down among the Halliwell descendants and will continue to do so for the rest of time.
Phoebe Halliwell was having a nightmare again. She hadn't slept properly for days – ever since her eldest sister, Prue, had died. And every night, without fail, the nightmare crept up on her when she least expected it: the same nightmare every time...
Piper and Prue are lying motionless on the floor in a pool of blood. The wall connecting the two rooms in the Manor is completely destroyed. Blood flows out of both the sisters and the air smells metallic. Leo orbs in. A massacre. That's what he sees. On the stairs, staring in disbelief at Prue and Piper, Phoebe and Paige are standing still. Shax, a grey demon surrounded by wind, stands in between the two sets of sisters.
"Say the spell, dammit!" Leo yells. "Phoebe! Paige! Say the spell!" That seems to be all Phoebe and Paige need to start their vanquish.
"Evil wind that blows,
That which forms below.
No longer may you dwell,
Death takes you with this spell!"
It's a surprise to all three conscious people in the room that the spell actually works over their crying. Shax screams and disappears, but the two sisters know it is far from over. Phoebe and Paige run over to both of their sisters, falling to their knees. "Leo heal them!" Phoebe begs.
Leo raises his hands above Piper's body and a warm glow spreads beneath his fingers and over Piper's body. Her wounds disappear and she wakes up suddenly. "What happened?" she asks as Phoebe hugs her tightly in relief. Leo is already trying to heal Prue, with Paige at his side, trying to assist.
"Do something!" Phoebe shouts. "Leo, Paige! Heal her!"
"Prue!" Piper cries, finally noticing what her husband and sister are doing. "Why isn't it working?" she sobs. Leo doesn't answer; he keeps trying to heal Prue.
"Why isn't it working, Leo?!" Paige repeats.
But all three of them already know the answer: "I can't heal the dead."
Piper and Phoebe throw themselves at Prue, whilst Paige, crying hard, keeps her hands in the healing position; determined to save her big sister. "Come on, come on," she mutters. But there isn't any point, and Paige already knows this, even though she doesn't want to admit it. Prue is dead. She is gone, and nothing any of the sisters do can bring her back.
As Phoebe woke up, she stifled a scream so as not to wake up her sleeping boyfriend. Her face was wet with tears and she was still crying silent ones.
She couldn't help but wonder if she'd ever be able to move on. This nightmare had haunted her every night since Prue's death and Phoebe just wished with all her heart that her premonitions would give her the peace of mind she needed and thought she deserved in order to get on with her life.

In the room next door, Paige Halliwell sat silently on the edge of her bed, listening to nothing but being plagued by her loud and ongoing thoughts. It was 3 in the morning, she should have been sleeping, making sure she wasn't too tired at Prue's funeral tomorrow, but instead, she was wide awake and sketching. That was the only way Paige felt she could escape from the thoughts that were constantly on her mind.
She didn't notice, but she was crying as she drew.
"I love you, Prue and I'm sorry," Paige mumbled. "I miss you so much, I wish I could see you again. I'm sorry I couldn't save you, but don't punish Piper and Phoebe because of me. Please come back."

Piper Halliwell, as usual, couldn't sleep. She sat in the attic, mourning her dead sister but too scared to let her go. There had to be a way to bring her back – they were witches, they knew magic; they had saved people from the brink of death before so why couldn't they save Prue? Why had Leo chosen to save Piper over Prue? If he'd known there'd only be time to save one, it should have been her, not Piper. She was the oldest, the strongest: she deserved to live more than Piper did.
"It's just because I'm his damn wife," Piper muttered angrily through her tears.
Since it had happened, Piper had let that fact dictate how she treated everyone around her, especially Leo. She hated that because he loved her; because they were married, Prue had died. And she hated that she couldn't help but love him still; when there was a nearly 100% chance that she was going to lose him.
Like she'd lost her mom, her Grams, and now Prue. Piper didn't think she could take it anymore – what if it happened to another one of her sisters? All the loss in her life was too much and any more of it would destroy her. What had she done to deserve it? What was it a punishment for? All Piper had ever wanted to do was live her life; get married; have a couple of children; maybe even grandchildren.
But no.
Piper was Charmed. Or doomed, depending on how you looked at it. No matter how desperately she wanted a normal life, she would never get one.
All this talk of her stupid 'destiny' thing was doing her head in. They were no longer the Charmed Ones, so why did Leo continue to remind her that the destiny she shared with her sisters was so important? It had stopped being important when Prue had died. When she had been murdered. By the very thing that their 'destiny' said they were supposed to be stopping.
Well, Piper had thought, I'll show Leo what my destiny is now. She was going to vanquish this demon even if it killed her. It wouldn't be hard; not to find, anyway. The three (that number made Piper's ribs ache) of them already knew the human form of Shax and the name. Joanne Lacey – that's who she was going to kill.
She was going to avenge her sister's death, no matter what.
"You can become the Power of Three. That's what the prophecy originally foretold and now it's come true," Leo had argued.
Piper had sworn at him for saying that. She didn't care about the damn Charmed Ones anymore – it was a joke. She didn't care about saving innocents. She didn't give a damn what those bloody Elders said about their 'destiny'. They could shove that word up their arse. They could take away Piper's powers, they could do anything they wanted: they weren't The Charmed Ones anymore.
The only vanquishing she was going to be doing would be vanquishing Shax. Piper wiped her cheeks then heaved The Book of Shadows onto her lap. She skimmed through the pages to find the vanquishing spell for Shax, but her hands stopped flipping the pages at a different spell. The To Call A Lost Witch spell.
Piper, Phoebe and Paige had tried this spell so many times to bring Prue back over the last week but it had never worked – she truly had been gone. But a thought suddenly crossed Piper's mind. Maybe, if she combined this spell with the Blood to Blood spell, and substituted the word 'sister' into it instead of 'witch', there would be enough love and power to bring Prue back? Would it work? Maybe, she could even get Phoebe and Paige to come and join her if doing it herself didn't work.
Putting The Book on the table, Piper started to create the spell. Once it was finished, she got the necessary ingredients for the ritual and placed them down, along with a few of Prue's belongings.
Piper sliced the tip of her finger for the spell and couldn't help but remember the first time they had used blood to bring back a witch. It had been Prue's idea to summon their ancestor Melinda Warren to help them vanquish a warlock and Piper had not wanted to cut her finger at all. She had been too scared, and her three sisters had laughed at her for it.
She hadn't even flinched this time. She had become numb to the pain because of everything she had witnessed and lost in the last 3 years.
A couple of drops of blood were enough for that part of the spell, then Piper started to chant:
"In this night and in this hour,
I call upon the Ancient Power.
Blood to blood, I summon thee,
Blood to blood, return to me.
Bring back my sister.
Bring back the Power of Four."
A draught picked up in attic and Piper held her breath. "Piper?"
I really hope you enjoyed the first chapter. Review if you'd like, I'd really appreciate it :)
