Mello's reason behind his plan.

I Win
"Why?"
One simple question, one simple word and Matt didn't even look up from his game. I watch him, the minutes passing as the question hangs in the air.
I smirk. "Exactly," I reply. He glances at me, through those goggles of his. The game never stops, his thumbs pushing A and B just like always, but I know he glanced at me. Just like I know he knows the answer.
After the case is over, after Kira is stopped, Near will wonder why.
He will ask Hal, and she will tell him. She will explain what she told me, and how I replied. He will connect the dots, and he will wonder why.
He will go to the meeting. He will explain everything. He will catch Kira. He will wonder why.
He will sit and play with his toys, put his puzzles together, and build his forts. He will solve the great cases of the world, all under the name of L. He will continue, he will live, and he will wonder why.
In between cases, he will look back. He will remember the facts. He will read my autopsy report so many times he will lose count. He will review the files and video surveillance. He will see the helmet covering my face, with the tinted glass, and he will wonder why.
He will know Hal was the leak. He will know that she passed information to me. He will know that I saw the flaw in his plan. He will know that I fixed it. He will wonder why.
He will review his knowledge of the notebook. He will ask the Shinigami questions. He will know that no one can be killed without a name and a face. He will wonder why.
He will go back and review the surveillance tapes. He will enlarge the helmet. He will look at it from every angle. He will wonder why.
He will wonder why I took that helmet off. He will wonder why I allowed Takada to keep a piece of the notebook. He will wonder why I allowed her to kill me.
Everything else he knows. He knows the flaw in his plan, and he knows I knew about it. He knows how I solved the problem, and he knows that he is alive.
He also knows I could have lived.
He knows that Kira never saw my face. He knows that Takada is the only person who could have killed me. He knows that I allowed her to kill me. He will wonder why.
Matt knew. Matt always knew.
The Kira case was to avenge L.
The Kira case was to be better than Near.
I could not solve one and not the other. It was always both, intertwined and colliding. My obsessions, my life were these two events. My death could only lead to the fulfillment of these desires.
I defeated Kira. Without me, Near would have lost. Without me, Kira would rule the world. Yes, I can die knowing that Kira will soon join meā¦and I caused it.
I defeated Near. Near will be the last one standing. He will be the one that finally brings down Kira, and I beat him. Not because I knew his plan, I saw the flaw in it, and I fixed it. Not because without me, Near would have died. I beat Near because he will wonder why.
He will wonder why I took my helmet off. He will wonder why I allowed Takada to kill me. He will know I could have lived, and he will come to the only conclusion available. I died because of my emotions. I allowed that woman to kill me because I felt guilty that Matt died.
He will be wrong.
Near, who represses his emotions and believes them to be illogical and unnecessary, will never understand. Passion is my emotion. It is my passion to fulfill my desires. Passion ruled my life and it was my passion that led me to death.
To beat Kira, I need to allow him to be caught.
To beat Near, I need to offer a puzzle that he can't solve.
I win.
