Living up to the Name

Prologue

Train Heartnet, aka former Chronos assassin Black Cat, sat down on the bench with a huff. He was exhausted. The Bounty he had been hunting might have been a low level, but the guy sure had been fast. It also hadn't helped that he had only gotten a few hours of sleep last night, courtesy of a busy train yard.

"You look beat," said a voice. Train looked up to see his partners, Sven and Eve, sitting down. Sven was looking at him amusedly while Eve, being the bookworm she was, had her nose buried deep in a book. It was Sven that had spoken.

"That bastard was faster than I had expected," Train mumbled.

"You shouldn't underestimate your targets Train," Sven sighed.

"Hey! Those trains kept me up all night!" Train defended, "I'm taking a nap."

He proceeded to slouch over and close his eyes. Just when he felt the first touches of sleep to his consciousness, someone poked his shoulder.

At this point in might be fun to mention what book Eve had just finished. It was Warrior Cats book. But that wasn't the reason she was poking Train.

Train opened one of his eyes and looked at Eve. He asked "What Princess?"

"There is a light," Eve said pointing to a small wood.

Train opened both eyes and blinked in the light's direction. "What is that?" he wondered out loud.

"I don't know?" answered Sven. He didn't show it but he felt something was off. The light was too bright to be a flashlight and it seemed to be pulsating.

A curious and mischievous glint entered Train's eyes. "I'm gonna check it out," he declared. He jumped up his energy apparently restored, and jogged towards the light.

"Wait Train", Sven called. He followed Train towards the light. Eve also followed, leaving her book behind. She wanted to make sure her friends didn't get hurt.

{Time skip a few minutes}

Train's eyes widened with awe and curiosity. Sven and Eve stood a bit behind him, equally engrossed in the spectacle before them.

It was about six feet in diameter and had an unnatural glow. It pulsed as if it were a living thing, the light receding, then returning.

"Whoa," Train uttered, breaking the silence and voicing their thoughts at the same time.

"What is it?" Eve asked to no one in particular.

"Who knows," Sven answered.

Train, being his cat-like self, suddenly felt the urge to touch the light. He slowly reached his hand out.

"Wait. Train stop, we don't know what that is," Sven warned. Unfortunately, Train didn't listen and touched it. There was a shiver and the light withdrew even more than before. Train, Sven and Eve watched as the light shrunk, surprisingly sad that it was leaving.

Suddenly, just as it was about to disappear, the light swelled back, even bigger and brighter than before. The sweepers had to shield their eyes from the intensity of the glow.

Train thought he heard his name being called just as the light became its greatest, and then everything went black.

The light was gone, along with the three partners. There was no sign anyone had ever been there.

On a bench outside a forest sat a book. A wind kicked up, opening the book and flipping the pages. Everything was exactly the same, except for three new details.
