Chava's End

(Fiddler on the Roof) On their way out of Anatevka, Fyedka and Chava are assaulted by a Russian Soldier and Chava gets wounded...will she live a happy live with her Russian sweetheart, or will she meet her maker? Find out in this exciting add on to the beloved starcrossed love story of Chava and Fyedka. (Set about three weeks after Chava and Fyedka wed)

Chava's End

Setting: The Jews are leaving their homes after being evicted. The Russian soldiers are watching them leave and occasionally giving a slight shove to those moving slowly. Tevye, Golde, and the two children are far away. Chava and Fyedka are walking with bundles when a Russian soldier runs up to them with a knife.

RS: (yelling at Fyedka) TRAITOR! (stabs Chava in stomach)

(Chava falls to ground and Fyedka catches her)

C: Fyedka. I am going away now.

F: No. You're not, you, you can't, I-

C: I am going away. I am.

F: (whimper/sob) No.

C: And I need to know that you will be okay. Tell me that you are going to keep going, I need to know that.

F: I will be alright. I will keep going. I will find your family and try to make peace.

C: Good. I love you so much, more than you'll ever know. Fyedka?

F: Yes?

C: I'm pregnant. I found out yesterday.

F: Oh! It's okay don't think about that now.

C: I love you (repeats this a few times, each more strenuous than the last).

F: I love you so much. I love your smile, the way you laugh at the way I dance, I love the way your red hair shines in the sunlight. I love the way your eyes light up when the booksellers has a new shipment. God, Chava, I love you, you can't leave me.

C: (gathers her last bit of strength and attempts to prop herself up on her elbows, takes Fyedka's face in her hand, leans in to give him one last kiss, gasps, and falls back to the ground again. Dead)

F: (grief-stricken, mourning, crying, then angry)

(Allow each actor to personalize the reaction to Chava's death)

F: (pounds the ground with fist, then goes after the soldier who killed Chava and stuck around to watch the outcome.)

Russian Soldiers standing nearby: (shocked, they have never seen Fyedka like this before, and all over a Jew.)

F: (catches the soldier) you killed my wife, the woman I loved. I could kill you right now, I should. But I'm not like you. And you have her to thank for that, she made me different. You owe that woman your life. Now get out of here.

The stage empties of everyone but Chava and Fyedka. Fyedka goes to her body and cries softly but audibly over her. Then blackout.
