This will take place a few months after the series finale (still crying about it) because Clary and Jace deserve a happy ending just like everyone else. I am kind of mad that everyone got like a fairytale ending except them. In this, Clary was forgiven by the angels and her memories were slowly restored. I am also mad that we never got to see Clary and Isabelle become parabatai (even though Clary and Simon become parabatai in the books), so I am correcting that.
This is the first of hopefully many one shots describing the relationship between the various parabatai we see in the series- books and show alike. It will focus primarily on Clary and Izzy, but I will include one shots about Jace and Alec and Jem and Will. I am accepting requests for new ideas at any time. Let's see if people want to see more parabatai bond fluff like I do. Anyway, please enjoy how I picture Clary and Izzy's parabatai ceremony...
"This is about a year overdue."
"No kidding."
Clary smiled at Izzy as they both made their way to the training room for their parabatai ceremony. It only took them about a year to finally make it this far. Clary's mindwipe by the angels had prevented them from doing any real talking and planning for the ceremony. Once Clary returned to the Shadow world, she needed time to regain her memories and reacquaint herself with the Shadow world. Izzy was too busy being happy and relieved that her best friend remembered her to push for the ceremony to take place. Now that Clary was back, Izzy was willing to wait forever to become parabatai.
It was Clary who had once again asked Izzy if she still wanted to be parabatai. Izzy had been shocked at first that Clary would think that her feelings toward them becoming parabatai had changed in the past year, but overcame her shock to reassure her friend.
"Izzy."
Izzy looked up from the papers on her desk to see Clary standing in the doorway, nervously wringing her hands. She had not seen Clary this nervous about anything since before the angels wiped her memories and made her mundane. "What is it?" Izzy asked, instantly concerned for her almost-parabatai. She still felt great anger towards the angels for taking away her best friend before they even had the chance to properly discuss anything. Oh, she had been totally committed to she and Clary becoming parabatai. That wasn't the problem.
They had just never had the chance to actually talk about it. It was a serious step to become parabatai with someone. You needed to be absolutely sure that you were sure (Izzy knew that was not going to be a problem) about it. There were a couple other things that you had to do, but Izzy was not concerned. They had already proven that they could get through anything together. From demonic possession, evil fathers bent genocide, evil older brothers that were demonically tethered to your best friend...the trials for parabatai would be a cake walk compared to all that.
"Nothing is wrong, I promise. I just wanted to know if..."
"If what?"
"If you wanted to still become my parabatai." Izzy looked at Clary with the most serious look in her eyes. She stood up and walked around her desk to reassure her best friend. Her sister. Izzy grasped Clary's hands in her own and said with no hesitation, "Clary...I would wait a lifetime if it meant I could become your parabatai."
"Really?" Clary asked, looking up at Izzy hopefully.
"Of course. Know this. There is no one that I would choose to ever become parabatai with but you. You are best friend, my sister in every way but blood. I will always want to be your parabatai. But we don't have to rush into anything. We can take as long as you want to for the ceremony."
"Let's do it as soon as we can," Clary replied, squeezing Izzy's hand. She had a huge smile on her face and tears of joy in her eyes as they would finally have the opportunity to become closer than ever.
"Really?"
"Well, I'd hate for you to wait a lifetime for me."
Nobody was in the training room yet, so they had it to themselves. They took a moment to take in the room and looked at each other with face-splitting grins. "Is it wrong that I am so excitied?" Clary asked.
"I don't think so since I am excitied, too."
Izzy pulled in her soon-to-be parabatai in for a hug, excitied that they were finally becoming official. It had been too long of a wait. Neither could stop smiling. In the aftermath of Jonathon's death, it was like everything had fallen into place. Magnus and Alec were finally married and showing the Shadow world that love was one of the most powerful forces in the world. Simon and Izzy were going strong and even talking about moving in together. Even Luke and Maryse were happy. They had renovated the Jade Wolf to make it a place for all Downworlders and Shadowhunters alike to hang out. Although it had taken a little bit longer for Jace and Clary to get their happy ending, they proved that their love was more powerful than the angels and were now enjoying every moment together that they could.
"I think it would be wrong if you weren't excited. Right?" Simon said, walking into the room. He pulled in both girls for a hug before kissing Clary's cheek and Izzy on the lips.
"I didn't have time to be excited. I was too worried that Jace wasn't going to show up," Alec said as he and Magnus both walked into the room, hand in hand. Jace was right beside them.
"Of course I was going to show up. When have I ever- never mind. Don't answer that," Jace replied, clapping his own parabatai on the shoulder.
The group fell into an easy banter as they waited. They had all grown a lot closer together since experiencing the end of the world together, but also in the peace and calm that followed. It gave them time to truly enjoy one another's company without any world-ending threats looming above them. Clary was happy to say that this new world, albeit painful and depressing at time, had given her the family that she had always wanted.
"Are you ready?" Clary and Izzy both turned around at the feeling of gentle hands on their elbows. Maryse Lightwood stood behind them with a smile on her face. As the Head of the Institute, Izzy allowed her mother to come onto the premises of the Institute for special events, like her daughter's parabatai ceremony. She was happy to say that her relationship with her mother was much better and they saw each other regularly, mostly at the Jade Wolf.
"Never been more ready for anything," Izzy replied.
"I am so proud of both of you. And Clary, I know that if your mother was here, she would be very proud of the woman you have become." Izzy watched as Clary and Maryse hugged. Maryse had quickly adopted Clary to provide the mothering affection that Clary had lost when her mother died.
"Thank you, Maryse."
"You're welcome."
"Hey, you two troublemakers. It's time. Go get 'em, kiddo," Luke said, coming up to them and wrapped his arm around Maryse. Clary and Izzy both turned around to see that the others had arrived. Most of the Shadowhunters in the Institute were in attendance of the ceremony and a few from Idris as well. Clary and Izzy walked to the middle of the room and grasped arms. A circle of blue light surrounded them as they began to say the sacred words of the parabatai oath:
"Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee-
For whither thou goest, I will go,
And where thou lodgest, I will lodge.
Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried.
The Angel do so to me, and more also,
If aught but death part thee and me."
