Chapter One

I wanted to cry… Really, I did… But I couldn't show it. Not in front of him.

"Are you sure you're going to be okay?" asked my husband, John.

"No…" I said quietly.

John cradled my body lovingly. I know I'm being selfish by wanting him to stay, but he has to go; John is in the army and war is breaking out.

"It's so you will be save, baby; Besides, I'll come back. I promise." John smiled.

The car picking him up was here already at the side of the curb. John picked up his luggage and kissed me deeply.

"Remember… I'll come back. I promise." John reminded me kindly.

"Okay… I love you." I answered.

"I love you, too."

With a small frown, he started to leave. Tears welled up in my eyes and threatened to fall down my cheeks.

John threw his luggage in the trunk of the car and then got in the car door. I looked at him and he stared at me back through the window. I waved at John sadly, and he waved back.

That was it… the last time I could ever see him… alive.
