Click. Click. Click. Makoto typed slowly and rhythmically, working on a report for his higher-ups at the Future Foundation, which, to be perfectly honest, he couldn't care less about in the slightest. An alert popped up on his computer; a message from Alter Ego.

Glad for the distraction, Makoto opened it, and Alter Ego popped up on the screen. Despite his best efforts, Makoto still could not avoid wincing at the sight of the face of Chihiro Fujisaki, Alter Ego's deceased programmer. "Hey, Alter Ego," Makoto said, "what's up?"

Alter Ego bowed his head -which is to say, his entire self- in respect, "Naegi-Kun, I received a message to give to you from the field agents". Makoto snapped alert at that. He hadn't heard from Aoi or Yasuhiro for quite some time. "Really?" He asked, "what did they say?" "They found one," Alter Ego said excitedly, "A despair refugee!"

Makoto was taken aback; 'despair refugee' was code for someone who was once part of Super High School Level Despair, but rather than taking part in the mass suicides following the end of the Kibougamine incident, just left the organization. So far, they hadn't found any, and it was widely believed that there were none. Until now, apparently.

"I'll get Kyouko and Byakuya," said Makoto, "tell me where the refugee is". Alter Ego gave the location, but then said, "be careful, Naegi-Kun. She's in pretty bad shape". Makoto sent a quick message to the Future Foundation leader apologizing for the missing report, and quickly ran to get his coworkers.

She was cold. Hungry. Tired. She felt so many things. So many things. But there was one feeling she couldn't allow herself to feel.

"Despair..." She mumbled to herself, "can't... Give in to... Despair..."

She repeated it to herself over and over. It was all that mattered. No longer would she despair. No more. She saw a bright light at the end of the alley that had been her home, and then five people started walking towards her. She felt something different. Terror.

"STAY AWAY FROM ME!" She shouted, "I LEFT YOU ALREADY! PLEASE, NO!" A tall, blond haired boy in a green suit walked up to her. "It's fine," he said "we aren't going to hurt you. We aren't who you think we are". The girl retaliated with a hard kick to his jaw, but he was unfazed.

"We aren't going to hurt you," he said again, softly, "my name is Byakuya Togami, we represent the Future Foundation," he smiled, trying to comfort her, "and we are going to give you your hope back".
