Simplicity is a good thing.
Tara sighed as she hugged one knee close to her chest, wincing slightly at the pain in moving her injured leg. She stared at the dying embers of the fire, shivering, even though she wasn't cold. What was wrong with her? She looked at the moon, thinking of how happy Glenn had been to be reunited with Maggie, how they had kissed each other so intensely, how they had tightly held each other, never letting go. She wanted that feeling again, she realized. To be held tightly by someone she loved. To feel safe. But she couldn't. She wouldn't. It had hurt too much to lose everyone she ever cared about, and now she was an empty shell. Not even the promise of Terminus could lift her spirits.
"Hey, you eat anything yet?" Tara turned to see the girl Rosita standing over her in that confident way, without even trying. They had just met, but Tara realized that she liked her. Rosita had stood up for her, and Tara needed that, even if she would never admit it to Glenn.
Tara shook her head.
"Well, here. Better keep your strength up. That leg's not gonna get better on it's own." Rosita bent over slightly, offering her a can of something, seemingly unaware as her tank top loosely billowed from her toned figure. "Beans. I know. It's all we got though."
Don't look. Don't look. Don't look. Tara looked. Somehow she didn't regret it.
"Thanks." She took the can, struggling not to blush.
"Don't mention it." Rosita sat down next to her, nodding to her leg. "How's your leg? I tried patching it up as best as I could, but I could only do so much you know?"
"It's fine." Tara smiled slightly. "Thanks a lot." Don't do this. What are you doing? She tensed and looked away. I can't let myself get attached. Not again.Rosita noticed, but didn't say anything, instead choosing to stare into the fire.
The silence was incredibly awkward.
"Where are the others?" Tara asked, finally breaking the quiet.
"Well, Abe's on lookout, Glenn and Maggie are sleeping, and Eugene's snoring like a pig." Rosita grinned. "Just you and me."
Was there something more to that or was she just imagining it? Stop it, Tara! There's nothing there. A tiny voice interjected her inner monologue. But what if there is?"You like him, don't you?"
"Who, Glenn?"
Rosita nodded.
"No, at least, not in that way. He saved me. I owe him my life. Simple as that." Why does she care? Tara drank deeply from her water bottle, afraid she would say something she would regret later.
"I know you like girls, Tara." Tara spit out her water in shock at Rosita's words. Why would she say that?
"It's okay." Rosita affirmed, rubbing Tara's shoulder, as she choked and coughed. "You don't need to hide it."
"Hide it?" Tara laughed at how ridiculous that sounded. "I haven't hid it ever! I've had girlfriends. I came out when I was 14! Don't tell me to hide it."
"Then why are you hiding it from me?" Rosita said simply. "I see you eyeing my chest. You're not that sneaky." She crossed her arms as she frowned disapprovingly.
"Why do you care!?" Tara retorted, slightly aware that she was almost shouting. "Why are you so nice to me! Why are you always there? We just met." Her voice dialed back down as Rosita was suddenly in her face.
"Because." Rosita moved her face even closer, grinning sexily. "I like you."
Tara's eyes widened in shock as her lips met the other girl's. Her eyes slowly closed as she began to enjoy the kiss. But just as soon as it started, Rosita pulled away, leaving Tara desperate for more.
She heard the heavy stomping of Abraham's boots and his gruff voice. "No time for dilly-allying! We gotta move!"
Rosita swiftly jumped to her feet, her face back to her usual indifferent expression. She let Abraham pass, who was still yelling. Probably not the best idea.
As soon as he was out of sight, Rosita offered her hand to Tara.
She took it, unsure of what the kiss meant, but for the first time in a while, as she leaned on the shoulder of Rosita for support, Tara Chambler let herself hope again.
