A.N. This story and the next Rise of the Guardians oneshot I'm going to post are birthday presents for flowerpower71.
It was later in the year of Pitch's defeat. In fact, it was a few weeks before Christmas. Since it was also a weekend Jack decided to visit Jamie so that they could play.
However he had arrived early, Jamie and Sophie were still having breakfast.
"Hey Jamie, guess I got a little too excited." Jack smiled, having climbed through a kitchen window; don't worry he shut it.
"It's okay, we're almost done." Jamie smiled. "Don't worry about mom, she's upstairs getting dressed. Why don't you check out a book while you're waiting? You probably haven't read one in years."
"True." Jack chuckled before flying into the living room.
Jack then searched the shelves until he found some books that looked interesting because they didn't have titles on the spines. He pulled one out and saw that it was a family photo album. Wanting to see more of Jamie's family, he flipped through it until he came across a photo of a little girl who looked very familiar. His heart nearly stopped (metaphorically) and he felt an unpleasant cold feeling in his chest. Jamie and Sophie then showed up.
"Jamie...who is this?" Jack pointed to the photo of the girl.
"Her? She's our many-great grandmother Rosanna." Jamie explained. "This actually is a photo of a painting of her, that's why it looks a bit weird...anyway, I think that painting was made shortly after her brother died saving her life. She was about to fall into a pond and he sacrificed his life to save her. I feel sorry for the guy, he was barely an adult. But I'm also grateful to him, if it hadn't been for him then Sophie and I would have never existed. Rosanna's story is also what inspired me to be a good brother to Sophie, I don't want us to ever be on bad terms in case something happened to me."
"Rosanna..." Jack thought as he suddenly went through the memory of his death.
Beforehand he just concentrated on what he had done for his sister, but now he was focusing on Rosanna. How scared she was...and how upset she sounded when he fell through the ice. That's when he fully realized that she had watched him die. She had watched him die.
He then started to remember other times playing with her...despite all the tricks he pulled they always had fun together and loved each other a lot. They were best friends even.
Jack now felt a burning pain in his heart. The truth was, deep down, he had missed her this whole time, he just hadn't realized it until now. So basically around 300 years of missing her was hitting him all at once. That combined with the guilt of her having grown up without him, plus him having forgotten about her in the first place, made the pain even worse.
"Jamie...we can play later I've got to go." Jack went to a living room window, opened it, and flew away.
Jamie went over to the window and watched Jack fly away. He then shut it.
"Weird...oh well, maybe Jack had promised to do something for one of the other Guardians and forgot about it until now." Jamie shrugged.
A.N. About Jack being able to read despite the time era he came from: I figured eventually he would become interested in learning how to read and later learned after he became Jack Frost. I wouldn't blame him either, books can be a great escape when you're bored and/or lonely. Of course he wouldn't be able to use books as an escape too often, especially not after it became harder to break into libraries, hence why it's been years since he last read one. As for how he learned...well frankly I wouldn't be surprised if he asked Sandy to teach him by using his sand images to translate each word, or maybe he taught Jack through a dream. Or maybe Sandy used both methods.
