Mind Mimic
Sterling Desinty leaned back in the chair, smiling. It had been a long time since he had seen Edward Cullen. Bella Cullen had almost been a surprise, but not quite.
Sterling had read that book. The one called Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. That had been a surprise. It was against the rules for humans to know about vampires. He had been wondering about that. He brought it up now.
"Edward, how on earth did you manage to live through those books? I thought surely the Voltri would kill you for telling that Meyer woman our secret," Sterling asked curiously, running a hand through his short black curls.
"Oh, but I didn't. I never told dear Mrs. Meyer," Edward replied with annoying smugness.
"But she wrote your whole story. I've read those books, Cullen, don't mess with me!"
"All right! Let me explain. I never TOLD her that vampires exist. Wait!" Edward exclaimed when Sterling began to growl. "I met a vampire in Mexico, when I was hunting Victoria. A male vampire called Louis. Louis is a, how shall I put it? A thought impersonator."
"A what exactly?" Sterling demanded. He hated being confused.
"A thought impersonator, or mimic, I've heard both. He catches the flavor of people's thoughts to the extent that he can place thoughts in their minds without suspicion."
"More with the thoughts and flavors," Bella rolled her eyes.
Edward ignored her and continued, "Louis helped me. I told him our story and he planted it in Mrs. Meyer's head. It was almost a full time job for him, feeding the story to her, bit by piece," Edward chuckled, "And she thought she had a dream!"
"So what you're saying is, you set her up?"
"Yes."
"And the dream, the famous chapter 13, was sent to her through a Mexican 'mind mimic'?"
"Exactly. And as long she still thinks it was a dream then I haven't revealed us," Edward was grinning.
"You wicked, wicked vampire! No wonder the Voltri have been so harsh lately! But isn't dangerous, to be exposed to a mind mimic?" Sterling wondered.
"Yes and no. I have a better chance against Louis than most, but really Louis's power is in good hands. He's barely used it in the last hundred and twenty years or so."
Sterling was silent for a minute, then, "How did you convince him to take on the task?"
"Louis was holding a grudge against the Voltri. They killed his coven when they came to clean up the vampire wars down there. He thought it was great fun to trick them like that. Louis is only 13. He was very persuasive in his first life. He was changed for the express purpose of using his prospective powers. Turns out his powers were much stronger than the creators had expected. He ended up using his powers to escape from them."
"Edward Cullen," Sterling said, shaking his head slowly, "in my two centuries of vampirism I have never heard anything like it!"
"You're telling me!" Belle exclaimed.
