Random one-shot that popped in my head. Hope it's better than I think it is! Anyhow, enjoy!

Jasper ran as quickly as he could away from the house, shame and disappointment clouding his features, nearly suffocating him. Anger-at himself- clouded his vision. Had he not been a vampire whose reflex system was near perfect, he may have very well crashed into the trees that zoomed oh-so-near. If his relatively young instincts had not been flowing through him maniacally, he would have certainly would have.

Then again, he laughed darkly to himself, had that not been true he wouldn't have run away, wouldn't have pounced. Bitter disappointment shocked through his system again.

He couldn't believe what he had done, what he had been trying so long not to do. When Bella cut herself on that paper, Jasper couldn't help it. He tried to keep control, but he wasn't Carlisle, and he certainly had not been Edward. He leapt at her, putting not only her life but Edward's life in jeopardy. Now not only his "brother", but the girl he came to think of as a sister, probably hated him, and that was more than enough to make him hate himself.

Suddenly in the clearing he stumbled into appeared a small pale figure. Jasper sighed in relief on seeing his true love- the one person he knew still loved him back despite his lack of control. Of course Alice knew where he was; her insight to the future rarely lied.

"Jasper…" she said softly. In the flick of an eye, she was at his side, enveloping him in a tight- almost warm- embrace. "It's not your fault, you know. Nobody blames you for anything, don't act this way…" Alice whispered into his shoulder.

"Nobody but me…and Bella" Jasper replied, disappointment in his actions obvious with his tone. Alice understood how he felt about Bella- she may not be a vampire yet, but everyone more than felt she was a part of their makeshift family.

Alice began to laugh her high tinkling laugh before pulling out of the embrace, still holding Jasper's arms. "You should see her- she's apologizing for not being more careful! She's in there bawling, not because of the pain, but for making you miserable."

Her words made Jasper feel a little better- but not much.

"Alice, I can't believe how easily I snapped! Rose doesn't think I'm trying hard to stay in control….believe me, please…" he talked in a whisper, "I am trying. For Edward, Bella….and mostly you." He looked her square in the eye, praying she would understand.

"I know, I know better than anyone how hard you've been trying. I'm so proud of you, regardless of tonight. No harm was done, Bella's fine. I'm glad you've kept this up so long…I know it's not easy for you."

"You're the reason I do it…why I try so hard…I know how much you love her, Alice. So I tell myself to keep control because I love you, and I'd never intentionally do anything to make you feel sad…" Jasper was blushing- he'd never been too good at this emotional stuff.

Alice smiled nevertheless and said "I love you too, Jasper. Thanks for putting in all the effort for me."

"I just can't help feeling like I….failed you tonight. Please forgive me", Jasper said, an unusual pleading in his eyes.

"Forgiven…" Alice replied almost silently, before placing a sweet kiss on his lips.

And so, hand in hand, they walked back to the house, Jasper silently thanking every god known to man for having his beautiful angel Alice to keep him sane.
