A/N: I realize Kitty's powers don't work like this, but just for the sake of argument, go with it. (Yes, I did my research, I know how it actually works.)
Disclaimer: I don't own. Also, tell me if you like it with Kurt's accent or without. Thanks.
Sinking
"I can't stop!"
He turned around, his pale green eyes picking out her form as she sunk into solid rock, her hand reaching out for him. "Kitty!" The others could take care of themselves, he knew, so Kurt turned and moved to get back to the girl before she sank in too deep.
"Kurt," she pleaded, tears welling up in her eyes as she reached out for him only to pull back at the last second; she knew what consequences would come of actually touching him. "Kurt, don't go..."
He went to lend a hand to pull her up, his face twisted up with fearful worry only to watch her pull away in one swift motion. "Kitty, stop phasing! You'll get sucked to ze center of ze earth!" The furry boy almost thought to reach out again but knew better: she was protecting him. Her touch would make him intangible as well, sucking him to the molten lava core just as fast.
"I, like, can't stop!" Her voice was cracking, giving way to the sheer horror that made her heart pound and her blood roar. "If I stop, my molecules-" She swallowed a big lump in her throat as she looked up at the moon, the last light she'd probably ever see. "I can't stop."
"Try pulling yourself up," he pleaded, wishing only to pull her out of the ground and back onto solid earth where she'd be safe. There was a tug on his heart; was this the end of her? "Just come back to ze surface, you'll be fi-"
"I can't!" A sob leapt from her lips, rattling her intangible body with a shiver. "I'm sinking and I can't stop it! I'm, like, being sucked in or something, Kurt!"
"Let me teleport you out." He offered out a hand, but there was a sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach. Nightcrawler somehow knew she wouldn't take his help. "Come on, Kitty," the German begged gently, voice soft and reassuring, trying to keep her calm. Maybe she'd focus on lifting herself up and out if she were calmer... Kurt could only hope. "I'll get you out."
"I don't want you to get sucked in." She was already up to her shoulders and sinking faster by the second, the rock dragging her down, gravity laying heavy on her chest like a ton of bricks. "Just don't leave me," she whimpered. "I don't want to die alone." Kitty wanted to reach up and touch his furry blue face or squeeze his hand, but she'd become as untouchable as Rogue.
"You von't die," he attempted, willing it so badly to be true, yet he knew in his heart that she was leaving, that she'd be with the lava within a few hours. "And I am not going anyvere."
Her neck was already half submerged; her head would go soon next. After that, her life would only last as long as she could hold her breath, but at least she wouldn't feel the burning at the center of the earth. "H-hey Kurt?" she said, swallowing another lump in her throat. Tears were still crystalline in her soft brown eyes.
"Yes?"
"Thank you." Her chin had touched the rock now. Her mouth would go next. "For staying with me."
He wouldn't cry, he just couldn't cry. Her powers had gone horribly wrong, uncontrollably phasing her through the earth's crust. Freak accidents could get people killed. One of his own tears dribbled down his furry cheek. "No problem, Kitty."
Then she was gone., the last of Shadowcat sucked into the earth, her last words said, her tears shed.
All Kurt could do was grab at the earth where Kitty had been and wish that he had gone under with her.
