Somewhere Out There

Disclaimer: Like, I totally don't own all of those like, totally cool
FF8 people who just reek of awesomeness, ya know? Oh, and this whole
story thing is like totally based on that song from that movie, um...
with the mouse with that huge red hat, like, um, whatwasitcalled
oh, Fievel. (I love Fievel! I even still have a huge stuffed animal
of him.)

"Sis? Why won't you come back? I promised I'd be strong, but I miss
you..." Squall sat on the stoop outside the stone orphange where
he had sat for the past year since Ellone left. Matron walked out.
"Squall? Honey, why don't you go play with some of the other kids?
I'll watch for Ellone for you."
"No, what if she comes back and doesn't see me waiting then weaves?"
Squall looked up at her with tears in her eyes. Her heart melted, and
she wished somehow she could help him. Matron sat down next to him and
pulled the small four year old into her lap. She brushed down his
hair as she spoke to him.
"I'll sit with you for a while then. Would that be alright?" Squall
nodded and let her hold him close.
"Sometimes honey, people have to leave in order to keep the people
they care about safe. You know that, right?" He nodded. "Ellone had
to do that. She loved you, and everyone here very much, and when she
heard that if she stayed, all of you might be in danger, she decided
to leave."
"Well why didn't she wet me go with her? I could have protected her..."
"Right now... she's in a place where she isn't allowed many freedoms,
because if she is allowed to be out in the open, people could come and
hurt and use her. She didn't want you to have to grow up like that,
so she left you with us."
"Still." Squall crossed his hands and looked down.
"You do have to remember one thing though. Even though she is far
away and can't be here with you, she'll always be in your heart, and
she'll always be thinking of you. Every night before she goes to
bed she prays for you to be safe and happy. Look up at the sky for
a second Squall, and tell me what you see."
"The moon?"
"Yes, you also have to remember that the two of you are both under the
same moon and sky. And you see that falling star over there?"
"Uh huh."
"I bet Ellone's looking at it and wishing on it right now. You both
could be wishing on the same star."
"Really?" Squall looked at her eyes wide.
"Yes, and I bet she's wishing she could be back here with you."
"That's what I wished to..." Squall looked deep in thought. The wind
blew sharply and Squall shuddered. Matron hugged him closer.
"I don't think she would have wanted you to be sad and to sit out
here waiting for her. She wants you to play and be happy and have
friends and all the things she can't. She loves you and wants that
for you Squall. Come on inside. We'll all have hot chocolate and
smores." Matron rose up and lifted Squall in her arms. Squall wiggled
until she put him down, then he looked out toward the gate.
"I... I just wanna wait a few more minutes." Matron slowly nodded.
"Alright, I'll come back in a few minutes."
