He really was a beautiful baby. I watched the scen progress from my chair on the side.
The young man who would soon become my brother through the Order carefully handed the soft bundle of blue and a tuft of dark hair to his sister. He wiped his eyes as she smiled at the baby, turning her body slightly towards the Avatar without noticing she was doing it in response to his arm wrapping around her shoulders. The Avatar rose his hand and made some brightly colored beads dance for the baby.
Ny nephew sat on the other side of the mother's bed, his wife speaking to her. His hand was pressed between his wife's hand and her stomach, which was protruding greatly.
"Alright, I'm back." The petite blind girl entered loudly. "Hey, Twinkletoes, hand over the kid. I wanna get a good look at him."
A moment of awkward silence passed while the parents as well as the Avatar and his wife exchanged anxious looks. Before any of them could say anything, the earthbender continued.
"Relax, I'm joking. I don't wanna hold it anymore than you want me to. Here's your fire flakes, Sunshine" -she tossed a bag in the general direction of my pregnancy craving plagued niece-in-law- "and your tea, General Iroh."
"Thank you, Toph."
As I sipped my tea the baby, Kaori, a name meaning strong, was handed to his mother. Sokka sat next to her and the rest found seats near him. I saw her.
She was glowing and gave the impression that if I were to exhale harshly she might dissapear. I recognized her. She was the girl from the North Pole, the one who had sacrificed herself to become the Moon Spirit. Her eyes left the baby to favour Sokka for a moment, grinning at his wife and son with his eyes still slightly wet, unable to see her.
With a sad smile she returned her gaze to the baby and slowly extended her arm to the child, her fingers just grazing his cheeks. He cooed softly.
She turned her head to me and my eyes met hers, which had once glowed blue, but now were intense and silver, giving the appearance of the moon itself. I let my head fall and rise slowly, maintaining continuous eye contact. She returned the salute and the smile.
She faded away as quickly as she'd come.
