A/N- This is an oneshot set several years in the future.
Toph, 16, Aang, 16
Why?
Toph had many suitors. Of course she would. Who wouldn't want to marry the richest girl in the earth kingdom, not to mention the most powerful Earthbender alive? Nobody, of course, unless they already had a bride. But the big question was, why would she want to marry them?
That's what she would ask them, every time. Every time some sissy nobleman's son would waltz up to her bravely and ask her to marry him in front of a large crowd, or take her someplace private to make the proposal more romantic, she would ask the same question, why?
Many of the suitors were often confused at the question, and would just stare at her blankly for a few minutes before asking her to marry them again. To those, she would just walk away, letting her actions speak for her. But there were others who would pull some random excuse out of thin air. Most of them usually went something like…
"Why, I am the son of insert-name-here and it would be an honor to have the Beifong daughter as my wife."
Or…
"Because we are both rich, we are both of noble families, and I would protect you from all dangers. No one else would ever lay a hand on you if you were my wife."
And, to these horrible responses, she would laugh in their face. None of them
truly wanted to marry her; they wanted to marry her money or her social status.
Many of the suitors who were turned down would complain to her parents, or
spread rumors about Lady Toph. They thought she only used the "Why?" thing as an
excuse to not marrying any man. But that wasn't true.
Toph knew what she wanted to hear from her suitors. Not down to the word, but
she had a vague idea.
This continued for many months and Toph's parents were worried that she would
never find a husband. That is…. until HE showed up again.
And that HE happened to be Aang. He had been in love with Toph for quite a
while and now that her number of suitors had started to go down, he could finally tell
her.
He didn't take her to fancy restaurants or buy her expensive jewelry. Instead, he took her to vast open canyons so she could earthbend to her hearts desire and he made her things he carved himself.
Then, it finally came. Aang asked Toph to marry him. She loved him with all her heart and wanted to marry him, but she was still curious to why he wanted to marry her. So she asked him the same question, why?
Aang wasn't at all thrown off at the question, and simply stated, "I love you."
Because of those three little words, after all those months of waiting, Toph Beifong was getting married, and she told him so with a sweet kiss.
