Firiel gazed out at the dawn, the grey night was
leaving. She watched the gleam of the sun grow, till
the new light was glistening on earth and tree; on
turf beneath pale dew. Over the chamber her feet
strayed, down the castle they travelled, through
the grass they danced.
Her gown was trimmed of the leaves green, golden
trees could be seen thereon, as she wandered to
the flowing water. Wherefore had led her? It was
unknown, A song began to rise from within her
and out it burst, low and clear. It floated softly,
lingering amongst the fair trees and straying river.
Of springtime it sung of, and after, golden summer
Stories it told, of tales grevious and merry. Long
she stood there, her dark hair unbound, falling in a
shimmering cascade over her shoulders. Her golden
eyes both joyful and sorrowing, when lo, an
answering voice could be heard, a white ship came
sailing, a company of Elves it bore within, jesting
and lighthearted they were.
Fair faces aglow with a wonderous light. Firiel gazed
longily at the company, her song now stilled.
Onwards the vessel travelled until upon the sight
of Firiel standing there, it slowed. "Firiel, Firiel." Cried
the Elves, their light voices ringing. "Yet another we
may bear, to the blessed shores we go, to the white
land beyond the mist. Firiel." They called again their
tones pleading. A great longing took hold of Firiel,
forward she stepped, one foot touching the water.
Then great sorrow filled her and glancing back, the
cool green trees did summon her, they swayed their
leaves sorrowfully, their roots bringing a note of grief
to Firiel's listening heart. "I cannot." Firiel cried.
"The forests daughter am I, and so shall I remain."
Her low voice was calm as she drew back into the
shelter of her mothers arms. The white ship paused
but a moment longer. "Farewell Elf-maiden, Sindar
child." They bade her, their laughter stilling. The
craft again renewed it's course and was swept out
sight beyond the bend, to the grey sea it travelled.
"Farewell, kindred." She whispered and turned to
wander amongst her trees of green. A Traveller
evermore to be, fated to be the forests child.
