Author's Note: Here is my first Anne of Green Gables fanfiction! I hope you enjoy it.

"Race you to Green Gables, Gil!" Anne Shirley called as she took off down the path.

"Oh, you're on, Ms. Shirley!" Gilbert broke into a run also, and followed her towards the bridge.

Anne went flying over the bridge, but Gil, watching her with a grin on his face, tripped over a root, and soared into the deep water of the "Lake of Shinning Waters".

"Gilbert!" Anne shrieked. Her friends head popped back up, soaked. "Oh, Gil, are you alright?"

"Yeah." Coughed Gilbert, desperately peddling against the current to stay on the right side of the bridge. "Help me get back onto land, would'ya Anne?"

Anne recrossed the bridge, and got down on the muddy bank, "Reach for my hand!" She suggested, extending it.

Gilbert tried to swim over to her. "I can't Anne." He gasped, his fight with the current already taking his toll on him.

"Well, then, hang on!" Anne called, scrambling back up the bank to search for something she could lower to her friend. She quickly found one, and stretched it across the water towards him. Gilbert tried to grab on to the branch, and his wet fingers slipped on the bark. He momentarily went back under water, being pushed farther down the river.

"Oh, Gil, fight it, fight it! I'll run for help." A worried Anne told him.

"Anne it'll be to late." Panted Gilbert. "I'm just going to have to see where the river goes. See if there's something I can grab onto on my way." He stopped fighting the river, and it washed him downstream, covering his head once more. Gilbert fought to get back to the surface for breath, finally popping up, only to get washed undo again.

"Gil, come on!" Anne screamed at her drowning friend, near tears. "There's a branch up ahead, reach for it!" Thankfully, Gilbert heard her, and looked around as best her could for the branch. He reached as far as he could trough the swirling water, and latched onto the branch. Anne raced down the muddy bank, and crawled out over the log.

"Ok, now push! I'll pull you up." Anne gave a great heave, and Gilbert used the last of his strength to pull himself up to the bank. They collapsed in a panting heap.

Anne recovered first and turned Gilbert around, using her sleeves to mop water off his face. Gilbert lay gasping for breath, shivering, and pale, eyes closed.

"Are you ok?" Anne asked in a small voice. Gilbert nodded. Anne pulled his head onto her lap and waited for him to catch his breath.

Gilbert finally opened his eyes and sat up with a tired moan. "And usually your the one getting into scrapes!" He commented his a weak laugh.

Anne hugged him. "Oh, Gil, I was so worried." She leaned down and kissed his forehead. "Lets get you home before you catch your death of cold." She helped him up, and he walked staggeringly around a bit, before collapsing back to the ground.

"It might take a bit." He muttered. This time, Anne put his arm around her shoulders and helped him walk. They traveled over the bridge, wet, cold, muddy and tired, but together and happy.

Author's Note: Ok, yes, the end was sorta cheesy, but I thought it turned out pretty well! Review! And did anyone else think that the second movie was terrible except for the Anne and Gil scenes? Those two are my absolute favorite all time pairing, out of everything in the world. For now.
