Dawn Before

Gwydion sat stiffly on the cliff, watching the sky brighten, the sun peek over the horizon. In another hour, while the mist was still lifting and the dew still drying, he would be over this cliff, riding into Arawn's territory. Right into the heart, to wrestle his power from him.

Taran clambered up to where he sat. He had half a mind to start chatting about nothing, to take the edge off things. But he couldn't think of anything to say, so he kept his mouth shut. Gwydion's gloved hand brushed against his cheek gently, and he looked over at the Prince.

"Are you worried?" the wolf in human skin asked with a gentle smile. Brown eyes stared intently at Taran's face, memorizing every curve, every expression. Taran's mouth turned down for a moment as he considered Gwydion's question.

"I'm....worried. But you've led me this far, Gwydion, friend. So why should I distrust you now?" Taran turned away, his face burning, and mumbled something softly. Gwydion's smile widened.

"What was that, assistant pig keeper? I didn't quite hear you." Taran's face burned fiercer, blushing all the way to his ears.

"I said...I know you'll come back, because ....." Taran tried to fight back the heat in his face, pointedly ignoring the grinning prince whose gold flecked eyes bored holes into him. "Because you promised right? So...I have to be happy with that."

Gwydion wrapped his arms around his dear friend, his grip tight. "Of course I'll be back, Taran." a shout from Morgant below told them it was time for the forward group to get ready and go. Gwydion stood, pulling Taran with him. "You'll behave, I trust?" he asked with a wink.

"I deserve to be fighting with y–!" Taran was cut off as Gwydion captured his lips in a kiss. He felt the world spin around him, and then fade. He melted into Gwydion's arms. When the kiss ended, Taran was left panting, staring into Gwydion's eyes as the prince smiled.

"Wait for me, and stay safe." and then the wolf was gone, sliding down the rock face with ease, leaving Taran blushing in the weak dawn sunlight.
