It'd been about half an hour since Amy and Tim left to put little Lyndy to bed when Georgie and Jade announced to go back inside as well. Jack guessed that those two girls had a lot to talk about since Jade just got back from rodeo school and although they were so different in character Jade and Georgie shared a deep friendship. There was probably a lot to catch up, stuff girls usually talk about – Jack actually didn't want to know too many details about it. He knew that both girls were responsible-minded and trustworthy so he didn't worry about them. If they needed some advice from an old guy like him, they could come and ask him, but as long as this isn't the case, he would just watch and observe from a secure distance and try to not get too involved in the girl's stuff.
His eyes wandered from the vanishing girls that just walked through the door back to the slowly decreasing flame of the camp fire. With the disappearance of the last reddish and soft shade of the setting sun, Jack felt the cold of the night creeping back in. Stars begun to pop up in the now dark sky and once again created a masterpiece that was so familiar to Jack. He was almost sure to name each constellation his grand father used to teach him when he was a young lad. They spent many nights out here to either stare into the sky for hours or to observe nocturnal wildlife. His father was never too fond of those nightly activities since Jack had enough on his plate with school and his daily duties on the ranch, but Jack loved it. He loved every minute he could spent with his grand father and now at his own advanced age he could say that he owed most of his knowledge to him. Jack's eyes rested thankfully on one specific star that shone just right above the chimney of the farm house. He pulled the sides of his jacket a bit closer and stretched his legs towards the small fire to catch a bit more from its warmth.
A slight shiver beside him led his attention back to the woman that leaned close on his side and rested her head on his shoulder.
"Are you cold?", he asked and was about to get up to put more logs into the fire.
"No, no. I'm fine. Stay.", Lisa replied and put her hand on his leg to keep him from leaving.
Jack settled back but grabbed the blanket Amy left on the bench earlier. He swung it around her shoulders and pulled her closer to him.
"Thanks", Lisa smiled and let her hand slip back into his.
With all those good memories from Jack's past, he was even more thankful for each present moment. After Lyndy's and Marion's death and besides the health issues in his age he would have never thought that being old could be such a pleasant period in life. Of course he sometimes wished he was younger just to keep up with Ty and Tim or to spend more time in the saddle and with his cows but he wouldn't trade in anything he had. He had a wonderful home which was not that big but charming anyway. He had a handful of close friends that cared about him. He had a family that seemed to expand every now and then and he had Lisa who most of all is his second chance to find and live true love after his first wife past away. Jack and Lisa were completely different in their personalities and life styles but there had always been one thing that bound both of their souls together from the beginning on: to find a place where you could settle down; where you would feel safe and secure; where you would feel welcomed and loved; where you could feel home. Jack never questioned Heartland to be his home but there were times where he felt unbalanced and incomplete. Especially after his daughter's sudden death he wasn't sure how to keep things running. The more thankful he was when Lisa entered his life who herself searched for a place to come home to and with finding it in his heart she caught him in mid air and helped him to rediscover the beauty in the things he had. It hasn't always been easy to love a much younger woman but after all those years and all those ups and downs he couldn't imagine a life without her.
Jack turned slightly towards her. Her shivering stopped a few minutes ago which meant that she must be warm now under the blanket. He pulled his hand out of their grip and let it wander up to her face where it softly rested on her cheek. Taking notice of his movement, Lisa looked up at him – half puzzled, half loving. The fire crackled quietly in its bowl and send a few sparks into the cool air which glimmer reflected in Lisa's bright eyes. Jack's thumb stroke over her cheek bone.
"I am very thankful to have you in my life, Lis.", he whispered. Lisa's puzzled expression disappeared and made room for more: love. Her lips formed a sweet smile on her face and her hand reached up to his to squeeze it approvingly. Looking into her faithful eyes Jack was sure, there was no life without her. There could never be. He pulled her closer and pressed his lips against hers. They lingered there for a moment, each of them enjoying this little familiar but still magical gesture. Sometimes he didn't know how this was possible but he kept loving this woman more with every day. He knew that he didn't find home only on Heartland but also in her. She was home to him.
Lisa pulled back form their kiss carefully and again looked up only inches away from his face.
"I love you.
I love our life together.", she breathed meaningful.
Her warm breath tickled on his lips and he couldn't resist to place another kiss on hers. This time deeper. His hand wandered around her neck to pull her even closer to him.
There is too little time left. To little time left to kiss and love this woman. Too little time left to enjoy life. To live each moment in its fullest. In the here and now.
