The Rekindling of Love
Chapter One

What had happened, neither knew. Who had done the wrong, neither knew. Why what happened, happened, nobody knew.

"Hey, Hermi, it's Courtney. Just thought I'd drop in and say hi!" 'End of message,' the message machine said. "Well, what a welcome back to the muggle world I get!" Hermione picked up the phone and called Rosie back. "Hey, Courtney. I guess you're not in. I just got your message. We should get together and talk...well, bye." Hermione walked around her small home. She hugged herself remembering the laughter of it all. Before...before the bad had come...She mentally kicked herself for bringing it up again. She had forgotten it for 2 years, she could forget it for 2 more. Or longer. What she needed right now was a friend...it seemed like no one knew or understood. She had just left the wizarding world for good. Harry Potter didn't know, for he was in Albania, searching for clues of Voldemort's disappearance. She feared that she would never speak to him again. He was just too far away in more ways than one. Hermione decided to go somewhere. Anywhere. Anything that reminded her of what happened in that very room. She grabbed her purse and headed out the door. She walked outside, and the air was fresh. She had longed for the sense of home, and she finally found it with that breath. She walked the streets, looking up and down the familiar driveways. She saw young children playing in front yards, and inwardly winced. It was not meant to be, she told herself. It's not who I am. She kept on walking. She finally reached her destination. Before her parents died, they would take her here as a small girl. Her father would push her on the swings. Her mother would run around the slide again and again, lifting her up to the top. It was the park. The park seemed like such a stupid place for being centered, but this was where she came to remember. The park's real name was Mermaid Park, but Hermione called it My Park. She sat herself down on the swings and started off. First she giggled, then she laughed aloud. This was what she needed.

It happened so quickly, she had little time to think.

"Hey, Hermi. How're you doing?" Courtney stood above Hermione. They were in a hospital.

"What-what happened? Why am I here?" she asked, confused.

"Herm...there's no easy way to say this, but you were on the swings...and...a gun went off...you were hit in the back..."

"Who?" her eyes finished the question.

"A kid...playing with his father's gun. Nobody else was hurt. The bullet missed your spinal cord by inches. You were very lucky. It looks like you'll be ok, but..."

"But what?" she tried to sit up, but couldn't. The pain was too much.

"But you might not be able to recover fully...ever."

"Why?"

"The bullet somehow, missed your backbone, but lodged in your lung. They performed surgery to remove it, but, you may never be able to run...or jump...or even walk because of lack of air..."

"But...I don't understand..." Hermione whispered. "I was just on the swings...I don't remember anything..."

"It's ok, Herm...you don't have to remember...just try and get some rest." It seemed to Hermione like she closed her eyes and she was asleep.

To be continued...
