BATTING A THOUSAND

By: Vanessa Sgroi

Dean slapped through another set of branches mumbling a curse. "What the hell are we doing out here again?"

"We're hunting is a baatalangoliath."

"Why don't you just say it's a giant bat? That's what it is, right?"

"Okay, yeah, it's a giant bat. A giant mutant bat."

"How big we talkin'? Like pterodactyl big?"

"Well, having no reference point..." A whoosh of wings sounded overhead. "I think we're about to find out," yelled Sam as he dived to the ground.

Dean was a half a second slower and felt the brush of a leathery wing across his cheek, just before he felt claws sink into his shoulders. He cried out in pain as his feet left the ground. The baatalangoliath drifted higher and higher, chittering in delight as it claimed its next prize.

Suddenly, the giant mutant bat jerked hard, screeched in pain, and spiraled into a free fall. It hit the ground, thankfully landing next to, not on, its prey.

Dean quickly rolled away to avoid its death throes, stopping when he came up against Sam's legs. He stared at the blessed and anointed arrow protruding from the carcass. "Damn, that was a hell of a shot!"

Sam helped his brother up, blowing out a relieved breath. "More luck than skill, I think."

"Nah. I've seen you practicing with that thing," Dean demurred, referring to the elaborate bow still clutched in Sam's other hand.

"I was terrified I was going to hit you, not the baatalangoliath." A tremor worked its way through Sam's body.

Dean dropped a comforting hand on Sam's shoulder. "Hey, you're almost as good as the Green Arrow."

"You do remember that he's a comic book character, right?"

"Yeah, but he's cool. Almost as cool Batman."
