A/N: I really enjoyed the episode "The Last Man" and I've always wanted to write something for the McKay of that alternate universe, where Sheppard was lost. I was also in the mood for angst, lol. :)

The Last Chance
It didn't matter.
The loneliness he felt when he actually remembered to sleep, and he found himself laying in bed, missing Jennifer so much it hurt.
The way he felt like he'd been punched in the chest when Lorne called with the news that Radek Zelenka was the Pegasus galaxy's latest casualty.
The whispered "Nutty Professor" comments that followed in his wake as he walked through the hallways.
The look on Jeannie's face when she came to tell him he'd missed Madison's graduation.
If he succeeded, none of that would ever happen.
So, it didn't matter. It didn't.
It couldn't.
