You Could Never Understand
It had been a horrible week, a very emotionally trying week at the Twelfth Precinct. Everyone's pieces had been scattered across the bleak landscape of Life. Or, that's what Castle would say if he were here.
Monday, at the most ungodly time, or more precisely, 5:23 in the morning
Kate Beckett woke to the ringing of the death toll- the ringing of her cell phone. She reached across her bed to grab the offending phone sitting on the nightstand. Her limbs, still struggling to regain feeling from her slumber, missed the phone knocking it in the floor. Kate cursed colorfully, diving to retrieve it. Barely answering before the last ring, she mumbled, "G' Morning, Ryan."
"Nice that you see it that way, Beckett. Parking lot on 28th and Madison," replied Ryan about as sleepily.
"K, be there in 10."
Kate ended the call and quickly got dressed and did her hair, not bothering to snatch a bagel- Castle always brought something. Entering the car, she stepped hard on the gas, the few neighbors who were already up and about knowing to not get in the way of Kate Beckett in the morning. Sure, she knew she was kind-of bitchy in the mornings, but then again, who wasn't?
True to her word, she was there in 10 minutes, but as usual, not before Esposito, Ryan, and Lanie. Little did she know, that was a very good thing today. When she got there, she was met by a flustered and teary Medical Examiner. Overwhelmed, she barely caught the smaller woman in a hug.
"Oh, Kate! It's just so horrible!"
Very cautiously,Kate stepped over the crime scene tape to meet Esposito and Ryan. 'Please tell me she's over-reacting,' Kate mouthed at the pair. They shook their heads solemnly. Beckett's attention was caught by the Captain walking up alongside them. Apprehension growing at a steady rate, she asked with trepidation, "Captain, what is happening?"
He solemnly nodded at the body. "Go see," he said, voice breaking slightly. She walked over to the body lying on the pavement. Her friends walked close behind her, knowing what would happen. She saw the face of the person. And screamed. And screamed. And fell into Ryan's arms, who patted her back and gently lowered her to the ground.
