The rising sun was reflecting off the lake. Reed had left his car idle and walked out on the docks. He looked around, noticing he was alone. He stumbled towards to end of the dock, nervous but determined. He exhaled heavily, the winter air turning his breath into steam. Dragging along with him he had a weight attached to a rope. Reed could barely pull it along, but he somehow got the weight at the edge of the dock.
He looked up towards the orange sunrise, put his jacket down, and began to laugh. Here he was, about to kill himself, and he cared that his Burberry jacket was getting dirty. He glanced back at the parking lot; half hoping someone would be there to stop him. When no one was there, he looked down at the weight attached to his ankle. He then, with much effort, pushed the weight into the water below.
With a splash, the weight hit and broke the stillness of the lake. The rope was falling quickly, creating an ongoing amount of ripples in the water. Upon realizing how dry his eyes were, Reed laughed for the second time that morning. Why wasn't he crying? He had been doing nothing but crying since the Valentines fair when Micah came back. The rope was falling quickly, but was long enough that Reed had a few moments before he would be pulled under. Those seconds, though in reality were very short, lasted hours for Reed. He knew he was about to die, and he couldn't do anything about it. He didn't want to. Shane made it clear that he wanted Micah, not himself. Without Shane, he couldn't live. When he thought Shane had been lost in the mountains, Reed hadn't been able to leave his room. Now that Shane was alive, but in love with someone else, Reed couldn't bring himself to do anything. Sleeping was even impossible. But that would be over soon.
A car pulled into the parking lot. "Reed!" Shane ran from his car, not bothering to shut his door. Reed turned around, surprised. This couldn't be real. He had this dream before, of Shane running towards him. He was just imaging the boy running towards him. "Reed, you're okay! I thought you'd be. .well, I mean..", Shane paused for a moment to catch his breath, then continued. " What happened? What are you doing here?". Shane was talking quickly, trying to get everything out fast enough. He still feared the boy in front of him would disappear.
Shane got down next to Reed, the red head still emotionless. "Reed? What's wrong?" Shane was concerned, but couldn't help smiling. Reed was alive, and sitting next to him. Reed looked up at the boy next to him, still believing this was just some hallucination. Shane was smiling at Reed with one of his ridiculously cute smiles that made Reeds heart skip a beat. Could this be real? Was Shane actually there? Reed opened his mouth to say something to Shane.
Those words were lost when Reed was pulled forward into the lake.
