Greg knew Sam and Jules were going out, he didn't know for how long, but he could see it in the way they looked at one another. Deciding he needed to confound them about this before the commander found out he talked to Sam, who was a stone wall, giving him no information, yet not directly sating they weren't involved. Deciding he was getting nowhere he called in Jules. Jules was the most difficult team member to communicate with, one because she was a girl, but she hid her emotions so well unless she was tired. He had known her long enough to know that when she was tired everything was off, especially her emotions. The only time he had ever seen her cry was at a gun call that lasted 10 hours, on top of a 9 hour shift and that was after she had gotten crap from the commander and Spike had said something to offend her, he saw her silently walk away tears streaming down her cheeks.
She stood in fount of him, the height difference was obvious, but he could tell she was panicking.
'Jules, take a seat'
She nervously sat down but held eye contact.
'I want to ask you a few questions'
'About what?'
He made a mental note that she was already defensive, and it was probably a good this office was completely closed off from everyone else so they had complete privacy.
'Look, I'm just going to come right out and say it. I know you and Sam are involved and I want to know how serious it is'
He saw her skin flush just the slightest, but she spoke
'I…serious enough'
Ok, this was good, she didn't deny it.
'You know that is against regulation'
She simply nodded.
'You know that one of you-'
She cut him off
'Look boss, I know it's against regulation but you can't make us transfer, this team is out life, our family!'
She knew what was coming, he saw the slight build-up of tears on her eyes, but she managed to blink them away.
'Well I am afraid you will have to br-'
Again she cut him off, but he knew it was to keep her from breaking down in front of him
'Yeah, ok I will deal with it.'
She said swiftly and stood up, and right as she was about to leave he took her arm and just held eye contact. He saw the tears in her eyes, the hurt and fear irradiating off of her.
'Jules…'
'No, please no'
She begged him, her voice so small and quiet. Neither of them moved but a single tear slipped down her cheek and it broke his heart. At that very moment he realized what he was doing to her, to them. Jules was the closest thing he ever had to a daughter, even more so than his own son. Slowly, as his expressions softened more tears escaped from her eyes, and although she tried to look away he didn't let her. Pulling her into a hug he was surprised when she didn't resist, instead she held onto his jacket. In his arms she felt so small, it amazed him how good at this job she was.
'I can't lose him'
She whispered. Greg didn't know what to say, he thought his whole thing was a fling, but it was really much deeper than he though.
'Keep it out of the station'
He whispered and kissed her forehead. She looked up to him with wide eyes, almost confused
'You should go, before I change my mind'
She smiled, took a few breaths, wiped her eyes, and said
'Thank you boss, you have no idea how much this means to me'
Her mood instantly lightened as she left and he had hoped he made the right decision, although he was pretty sure he had.
