It was a cold morning at the train station. It wasn't snowing, no, just chilly. The station was packed with soldiers heading off to the war.

Family members said their tearful goodbyes, wives prayed for the husbands and sons to come home alive, children said their farewells confused.

Mommy, where's Daddy going? When will he be coming home? Why is he leaving?

Does he not love me anymore?

A little girl with mousey brown hair and copper eyes looked around trying to find her father, no doubt getting on the train to somewhere. Why didn't he say goodbye?

There, there! The man with the headscarf and light brown bag slung over his shoulder. That's him, it has to be him!

The girl hugged her teddy bear close to her as she ran towards that one man. Once she was close enough to him, she opened her mouth and,

"Daddy!" she shouted. The man turned around, eyes widening, seeing his little daughter here.

She ran to him, wrapping her arms around his legs and burying her face into him. She let out a sob as she felt tears erupting from her eyes.

The man bent down, and picked her up holding her close as she cried, trying to comfort her.

"Daddy, why are you leaving?" She sniffled as she tried her best fight back her tears.

The man kissed her forehead and placed her down, kneeling so that he was more closer to her height.

"I have to darling. But I promise that I'll be back soon." He replied with a smile, trying to make it seem as though he were one-hundred percent sure that he would.

His daughter wiped tears out of her eyes. "Promise?" she asked. "Promise."

Holding out her little pinkey she waited until her father hooked his finger around hers and shook it.

The girl let out another sniffle as her father bent down to wipe her remaining tears away. "Please don't cry, you know I don't like to see you cry." He said softly to her.

Nodding her head, she held out her teddy bear to him. "Take Mister Teddy, he'll help you sleep."

The soldier smiled and took the bear. "I'll take good care of him, don't worry."

With that final word, he walked onto the train and sat down at a window seat.

As the train started to move, he waved out to his daughter, who was waving back, crying her pretty little eyes out.

A pang of sorrow hit him, and he couldn't help but feel a few tears slide down his cheeks as the train pulled him further and further away from his little girl.

Looking down at the worn out teddy in his hands, he made a vow to himself that he would come home a hero to the motherland and hold his baby close to him.

I promise I'll come home darling.

..

I promised.
