The Spirit observed the creations. He didn't create their forms, but he was tasked with determining their roles in the world. Hmmm, he thought, the 'antelope', as it is called, seems like a herbivore. It possesses speed, so predation shouldn't completely eradicate its numbers. It will be tasked as prey, and the consumer of the grass. Satisfied with this decision, he rested for a brief period. Now, all I have left is the lions and the hyenas, and both of them seem like they would be effective hunters. Unfortunately, only one of them can take the job, or it might overly reduce the prey. I'll decide this later.

The first lion, by the name of Kiburi, walked in an unnatural field. It was the tambarare ya maisha mapya, where the new creations waited to be placed in the Circle of Life. Fisi, the hyena, was ambulating in the same general area, but he left when he saw Kiburi. The two disliked each other, particularly as they knew about the rivalry for predator position. Neither wished to find out about the loser's fate. Kiburi, unbeknownst to Fisi or the Spirit, had a plan that would ensure his success. He held the Shetani Chupa in his paw. Making sure Fisi wasn't looking, the scheming lion placed the demonic device in the hyena's resting place. He rested, knowing it was only a matter of time before his plot folded out.

The Spirit went to the tambarare ya maisha mapya, still trying to determine who to send into greatness and who to send to Anansi knows where. Upon his arrival, the animals woke up quickly. Fisi unwittingly stepped on the Shetani Chupa, unleashing all sorts of evil spirits. They attacked Fisi, Kiburi, and the Spirit with gusto. They breathed fire, shot lightning from their eyes, and released all sorts of hideous monstrosities. The Spirit was able to use his magic to subdue them, but couldn't let go for fear of releasing them. "Get the Mtego wa Roho, and hurry!" the Spirit called. Kiburi had prepared for this, and was able to obtain it relatively quickly. He captured all of the evil spirits, thus gaining the favor of the Spirit. The Spirit was also very angry at what he perceived to be the 'foolish Fisi'. While Kiburi was assigned to the position of top predator, the hyena was cursed to live in the graves, forever relying on the scraps of meat that could be found there, cursed to struggle, cursed to go hungry. Kiburi had ensured the power of his descendants, while ensuring the poverty of Fisi's.

That was the story that the young hyena had been told. Ever since he was a cub, the boy had been taught to hate the lions and everything about them, particularly their kings. One can only imagine Kisasi's surprise when he found out they were now following the current king's brother. While he enjoyed the opportunity to take back the land that was, in his mind, rightfully theirs, he didn't trust this 'Scar' character. Not only because he was a lion, but also because of the way he reacted to his willing cohorts. Kisasi could see it in his face; the lion looked down on them. He thought that, as a lion, he was superior to them. Life in the elephants' graveyard had affected them, making them delirious and, occasionally, slow-witted. This had led to the inaccurate belief that the animals were 'stupid'. Kisasi hoped to change that. Someday, I will lead the hyenas to greatness. The thieving lions will be crushed under my foot, and the rest will bow down to me. The lions can make all the claims about 'The Circle of Life' they want to; they're easy to make when you're on the top of it. They won't stop my brethren, and they certainly won't stop me.
