The marauders grew up together.
James Potter was the first of the marauders to fall. Harry was there.
Harry was present when his father died. He doesn't remember it, he was barely one. He didn't even register that they were dead until he was older.
He's almost thankful he doesn't remember the murder, but he wishes he remembered him.
Sirius remembered James. So did Remus. But they didn't like to talk about him; Harry was disappointed, but understood.
Of course he defends his father when he needs too. Just because he didn't know James doesn't make him less of a father.
Harry thinks of his father's death everyday. Whether he remembers it or not.
Sirius was the second marauder to die. Harry remembers; he was there.
The flash of light Bellatrix shot from her wand was too fast for either of them to catch. Sirius had called Harry 'James', the first father Harry lost. He realized he would lose another.
All Harry could feel when he saw Sirius fall through that mirror was disbelief. The disbelief quickly turned to rage. White hot rage and pain. In the end it was Remus who stopped him from killing her right then and there. Because Remus knew. He knew that if Harry killed her he'd break. He was in as much pain as Harry was.
He chased after Bellatrix. He would have chased her to the end of the world if he needed to. She killed Sirius Black. The only family Harry had.
Peter Pettigrew was the third marauder to die.
Though perhaps he was the first; the friend he was died when he allied himself with Voldemort.
Harry was there too. He remembers the slight hesitation that caused Pettigrew's hand to strangle him. He remembers feeling almost nothing standing there. No remorse for the man's death. After all he killed James. A deed Harry couldn't forget. The thing Harry remembers most is pity. Pity for the man who threw away friendship for the same thing that killed him. Pity for the man who, really, killed himself.
Remus Lupin is the final marauder to die.
If they had all died when they should have he might have been able to joke that it was because he was the smartest. But no. Remus didn't joke anymore. Because Remus was an outsider and he lost the only friends he ever had.
Harry remembers when Remus died like it was yesterday. He remembers seeing him lying there right next to Tonks. He remembers every time he sees Teddy. Teddy's still too young. He still doesn't fully understand.
Harry felt more guilt than he thought possible. Guilt for not just Remus, but for everyone else. He didn't register that Remus is the last marauder. Not until he opens the map again.
Seeing them again. It was like a dream. Harry was almost convinced it was. The guilt never really left him, but he accepted it. He knows they're together now. Where they should be.
The marauders died apart.
And Harry was there for all of them.
