The setting for his story couldn't have been more perfect, the power had gone off due to the raging thunder storm outside, every twenty seconds or so, there was a flash of light or the crack of thunder.
Without the power, no work could have gotten done, and instead of going home, they were stuck with their coworkers. With the lights being off for over an hour and the only source of light being from lanterns that Rossi had left in his car from his previous camping trip, the team of profilers had decided to treat it like one and tell stories, real or made up alike.
Everyone had told theirs, except for Reid's. Though none of the other profilers were very interested in what would no doubt be some nerdy science shit, but they waited to hear it none the less. Before he got to start, Garcia asked, "Reid, are you felling alright, you look white, I mean we all look pale but you look white."
He looked at her without answering, and instead he took a deep breath before starting. "This is the story of how I died." He looked around, all eyes were on him; some confused, some saying 'what the hell.'
"The night before this one was full of lightning dancing across the sky and thunder filling the air around with its horrific explosive sounds. The wind had howled and the rain thick as if the clouds themselves where falling as a whole and not just droplets. Just as tonight is.
"I had gone to visit my friend who was staying for the weekend due to his job; I only lived a few blocks away from where he had been staying. My apartment was only a ten minute drive away. I thought I'd be fine.
"My friend had tried to convince me to stay the night and I tried to convince him I'd be alright, until it became a full blown argument and I left.
"It may have been me, blinded by anger or perhaps it was the storm, but for whatever reason it may have been, I hadn't seen it coming. The other man, he is in the hospital now, he had gone through an operation that had saved him and he will continue to live for many years.
"I died when my car came to a halt; it had flipped over two times. All the while, I could only think of how I never knew my father, how my mother would still need her medication, but I can't help her anymore. How you all have become my family and I never got to say bye."
Everyone around him was stunned into silence. Morgan, the first to unfreeze, asks, "If you're dead, how are you here?"
"How? I don't know. Why, I don't know either. Probably to fulfill my last thought of saying bye to everyone."
"I still don't believe it." Rossi said.
"Have you looked in the paper today?"
"No one reads the paper anymore, Reid."
"Well, this is my proof." Reid set down today's paper; it was opened to a page with a small picture on it and a brief description of the crash. After giving the team a moment to read it, he took the paper back.
By this time, Garcia was silently crying and being hugged by Morgan and JJ. Reid leaned back in his seat, put his head back, and closed his eyes.
JJ whispered "You look exhausted."
"Yes." He responded. "I still want to say bye to my mother, I don't plan on telling her what happened and I'm asking you all not to and that you take the money from my bank account and send it to Bennington. This is probably the last time I see any of you for a long time. So, until then, good bye." He got up from his seat and walked through the wall.
"I still don't believe it." Morgan whispered into the silence that came with Reid's departure.
