I waited for Bella outside of the restroom. Very quickly, her emotions disappeared—I couldn't "feel" them anymore. I began to follow, but I knew it was useless. Alice had already seen her with James.
I returned, as fast as possible without attracting attention, to where Alice sat. When she saw that I was alone, she stood. "Bella?"
"Gone. There were two doors to the restroom. She went out the opposite one."
Alice collapsed back into her seat in agony. I hurried to comfort her. "Alice, we know where to find her. When Edward gets here, we'll be able to tell him exactly where they are."
"I should have seen it coming!"
"Alice, stop that. This is not your fault."
"Why? Why would she go running off to meet him?"
I tried to come up with a possible reason, any reason, really, that could make sense of Bella's decision. Then, the answer came to both Alice and me. "The letter!" we said in unison.
Alice reached over and pulled the letter out of her bag. I waited as she read at vampire speed. When she finished, she refolded the note and placed it back in its envelope. "What did it say?"
"He has her mother. That's why she went."
Right then, the loudspeaker announced the arrival of the plane which held my brothers and my father.
I told Alice to go and have a car ready and to have directions to the ballet studio. While she did that, I waited for the plane to land. I kept trying to come up with the quickest way to tell Edward what was going on. It wasn't long before the loudspeaker announced that the flight had arrived and would be unloading passengers soon. I focused my thoughts on the day I first saw Alice. I knew Edward would realize that I was trying to keep something from him, but if I didn't control my thoughts, more than likely, my mind would wander to Alice's vision. That was the last thing my brother needed to see.
The passengers began to unload, and I soon saw my brother, who had probably pushed and shoved his way to the front. It took a few seconds for his eyes to meet mine, not that I blamed him. I was sure that he was looking for a set of brown eyes, not my gold ones. When his eyes finally found mine, they asked a silent question "Where is she?"
I kept my thoughts focused as I shook my head in answer. By this time, he was standing directly in front of me. "She ran away."
"She what?!"
I forced myself to stay in control of my thoughts as I handed Edward the letter that Bella had written. I monitored his emotions as he read what she had written. All I felt was the agony rolling off of him.
He looked up at me when he finished reading. "Alice?"
"Waiting in a car, ready to take us all right to Bella…" and James, I added mentally. Edward cringed. "Sorry."
He ignored my apology.
"Then why are we still standing here?" he asked in a strained voice. With that, he began to run, as slow as the current situation would allow, to where he knew Alice was waiting.
