Written for a contest. I don't particularly like Lily/James... in fact, I rather hate it. But here it is anyway...

In the Rain

It was raining when the train arrived in Hogsmead. This wasn't to say that it never rain…

No, it rained quite often.

But it had been raining considerably harder than he could ever remember.

The heavy rain, the cold, heavy rain, crashed down painfully on his body. He could swear each drop would leave bruises, and possibly a concussion.

He hurried out of the train and made way toward the carriages that would take them the rest of the way to the school.

"Oy, slow down James!" he heard Sirius shout after him. "Enjoy the rain!"

James found an overhang to take refuge under then turned back to his friends. Peter was running to catch up with him, and Remus was walking at a normal pace, but had a book over his head to protect him from the rain. Sirius was a bit further back, dancing, trying to catch raindrops in his mouth. James was fairly certain he must have been successful. How could he not have been, with how hard it was raining?

"Ah!" he suddenly exclaimed, slipping on the wet pavement and landing but first in a large, muddy puddle. He quickly got to his feet and ran to catch up with his friends, who were all under the awning, laughing.

"Not funny!" he shouted, coughing. "I got rain in my nose." He coughed again.

James rolled his eyes and motioned the others to follow him to the carriages. "Let's go before we catch pneumonia," he said.

When they arrived at the carriages, only one was left. All the others had taken off to the school in an effort to keep warn.

James, leading the group forward, stopped dead when he saw carriage.

"What'd you do that for?!" Sirius shouted, running into him.

Lily Evans sat in the carriage.

But this was not the Lily Evans he remembered from the year before.

Her fiery red hair was soaked and sticking to her face; her robes too, maybe a size too large, were dripping wet. She was sitting alone in the carriage, trying to ring the water out of her hair.

James could swear it wasn't raining where she was, as though god had granted her this small place of refuge from the storm.

She was…

Radiant.

"Hi Lily," Remus said, sliding into the carriage next to her.

"Hi Remus," she replied as Sirius climbed in on her other side. "Hi Sirius."

"Oy, James!" Sirius said. "What's up?"

He quickly shook himself out of his trance. "Evans," he greeted, sitting down across from her.

"Potter," she nodded curtly. "How was your summer?"

He was fairly certain she didn't care and was just being polite for the sake of Remus, who she'd been friends with for years.

"Rather boring. Got our first prank of the year all lined up though. I'd tell you about it, but then I'd have to kill you."

He was surprised when she smiled at his joke.

And in that moment, something changed.

He'd spent years chasing after her, years, trying to have her as his own.

But he had never really wanted her. He'd wanted her only because she was unattainable. Because she was the one girl who never wanted him, and he hated that.

But right now he realized…

He loved that.

He loved that she was different.

He loved that she always fought him.

He loved…

He loved the he might actually love her.
