To say Yuugi was sore would be an understatement. He downright felt like shit. Earlier that day, Ushio and his gang had caught him without Joey or Tristan nearby, and they didn't hold back as the punches and kicks landed directly on his body. Yuugi could still feel the tingling sensation of being hit running through him, especially his head. He had hidden much of the attack with his jacket but knew by tomorrow the black eye would be very prominent. His friend would be murderous when they found out, and he figured he should go buy some concealer.
"You should've let me help," Yami scolded softly from within the Millennium Puzzle. He would've flat out told Yuugi what he really thought but didn't want to put him down any more than he already was. "I could've fought them off." And then sent them to the emergency room if not the Shadow Realm, he added harshly within his own mind. It was times like these where he actually didn't mind sending people into the Shadow Realm.
"I know," Yuugi replied wearily as he began the walk home, ignoring the fact that it looked like he was talking to himself and that he was getting some weird looks from the passing people. "And I appreciate it, I really do, but I don't want anyone hurt."
"Except yourself, little one?" Yami cajoled lightly. "It brings me no joy to see you being hurt when I'm right here to protect you, and it pains me even more that you won't allow me."
Yuugi sighed. "Can we not talk about it?" The images and pains of being beaten were still the most prominent thought in his mind, and he could feel a headache coming on because of it all.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to cause you any distress," Yami apologized quickly once he realized what he had done. A long silent moment passed before an idea came to Yami. He materialized beside Yuugi as he was walking and floated alongside him. "When did Joey want to duel us again?"
"Friday when we all go to Big Burger for dinner," Yuugi replied automatically. It was a weekly thing but he didn't bother questioning why Yami would forget such a common event. He really couldn't care at that moment.
"With Red-Eyes in his deck, are you sure we can beat him?"
This caused Yuugi to laugh. "Dark Magician and the others could easily beat Joey's deck." A small smile had placed itself on Yuugi's lips at the mere thought and Yami couldn't help but smile too. His plan to get Yuugi's mind off of the day's terrible events was working brilliantly. "Though, I feel like Joey could become a really great duelist if he would only try harder and think through his plays."
"Yes, I'd have to agree with you there," Yami said with a nod. "Although, him going up against Kaiba would be an even better experience for his skills."
"Joey wouldn't be able to focus at all. Everyone but him and Kaiba know that they have crushes on each other. I think it's funny how that works." Yuugi's smile was now nearly completely back as he talked about his best friend animatedly, the beating far from his current thoughts. Yami was all too happy to see that beautiful smile back on Yuugi's equally beautiful face and simply floated beside him adding input to the conversation here and there.
