Title: A Day of Giving Thanks (Even for Parents)
Disclaimer: They are not mine; I'm just borrowing them.
Feedback: Yes please, any and all would be appreciated!
AN: I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I am still planning to work on Home to Stay. But between Senior year of college and loosing my inspiration, there has been a very long delay. I haven't given up yet. (I hope you all haven't either.)
Please send feedback; let me know what you think.
Not beta'd, so any mistakes are mine.
I'm sitting in bed making my list for Thanksgiving. We decided to hold it here at our place, inviting both my parents and Josh's mom. It will be relatively small; Sam's in California with his in-laws. Toby is spending it with Andi and the kids. Everyone has some place to be and Josh has very little backup. I could tell when talking to my father this afternoon that he is planning to give Josh the whole parent routine. My father can be a little overprotective.
I hear the door shut and I know that Josh is finally home. It's almost midnight, but I know that something was going on in the sit room so I won't bother him about it. Ever since we got back from our vacation and figured out what we wanted from each other, he's made a concerted effort to get home at a reasonable hour and have a life.
He comes into the bedroom. "I'm sorry I'm late, something came up."
I smile up at him, "everything okay?"
"It will be. I have some briefs to read, so I'll be out in the living room."
"Bring them in here; I was going to read some before bed anyways."
He smiles at me, dimples and all, and lays his bag down by his side of the bed. "I'll just get ready for bed. I'll be back in a minute."
After he gets ready and starts reading his papers, I feel the need to inform him of my father's plans for the holiday.
"I'm glad we decided to have Thanksgiving here with both of our families."
"Yeah, me too." He is a little distracted.
"Yeah, I think it's good that our parents get to know each other."
"Yeah."
"I think it's good that we both get an opportunity to know each others' parents better."
"Mmm hmm."
"And they can get to know us."
"…"
"I though I should warn you that my father might be a bit tough on you this weekend."
Well, that got his attention.
"What?" He asks slightly alarmed.
"Well, we're dating. He is going to want to ask questions, get to know you, et cetera. I may be 34 but he can still be very overprotective."
"But, we've met before. Several times. And you've met my mother before. We've already done the whole meeting the parents thing. I got along with your dad really well last time he was in town."
"Well, yeah, but you were my boss and friend. It's different now."
"How? I haven't changed. How is it different?"
"Well, now he's meeting you as my boyfriend."
"So, that means he's going to give me a hard time? Even though he never did before?"
"Of course he's going to give you a hard time now. He knows you're my one." Shit. I didn't mean to say that. I mean, we have talked about where this is going. We know this is forever, but we haven't really made those declarations yet. We've said the "I love yous," but the word forever hasn't been said yet. I turn away from him, looking back at my magazine, nervous about his reaction.
Moments later, I feel his lips on my shoulder and neck and I hear him whisper in my ear. "You know you are my one too, right?"
I can't help but smile. "Yeah, I know."
I turn back towards him, giving him a kiss on the lips. We look at each other briefly, smiling, before turning back to our reading.
A couple minutes later I hear Josh mumble. "My mom would never give you a hard time."
I can't help chuckling before responding, "Of course not Joshua; I'm her greatest chance at grandchildren."
The End.
