Sai sat at his usual spot on top of the Hokage Monument, watching the sunset.
He was unusually alone lately, considering the rest of Team 7 had been put on missions. Of course, not that it made much difference, considering that since Sasuke had come back, he had been completely and utterly ignored. Sasuke was anti-social like himself, yet somehow he attracted people rather than pushed them away like he did.
Sai frowned out at the beautiful scenery, the city lights started to shine as the sunlight diminished.
Why was he the one who was always left alone? He always tried to make friends, he gave them nicknames, he always tried to help or comfort them, so why was he always so alone?
He sighed, about to close his eyes before he caught a head of pink hair from the corner of his eye.
Sai stared at Sakura as she supposedly ignored him, staring out at the scenery spread out before them.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" She paused, and Sai said nothing, waiting for her to continue. "But it's not what everyone thinks it is. It's wasteful and cold, and everyone thinks that they can't survive without it, when they might be better off without it." She turned to look at Sai, aqua meeting emotionless coal. "Remind you of anyone?"
Sai couldn't understand the feeling inside him. Sakura was obviously talking about him, but why did it hurt so much?
Sakura sighed and looked out over the city lights again. "People are foolish, Sai, you really shouldn't try to understand them. There are some people who aren't human, and you'll never understand no matter how hard you try. You'll just end up getting hurt."
A trail of salt water started to wind its way down Sakura's cheek from her eye. Sai had read about this, it was called tears. He always saw it as a signal of when someone wanted comfort, but it suddenly seemed like so much more. Sai wanted to comfort her not just because it could allow them to be friends and he would feel that emptiness he seemed to be missing for so long, but because he truly wanted her to be happy. He wanted to see her smile, maybe twist her pink hair around her finger, maybe even blush.
Sai felt a painful lurch in his stomach. Sakura only ever blushed when she was around Naruto or Sasuke, or when someone mentioned something about her and them being together. He brushed the though away.
Sai scooted closer to Sakura, winding an arm around her shoulders and pulling her towards his own cool body. Unlike everyone else, he was pale and icy, just like his emotions.
Sakura started to sob into Sai's chest clutching at his shirt. Sai liked holding her close, it felt oddly right, but he hated it at the same time. Was he taking advantage of her? Hadn't she just said she hated him?
Sakura finally pulled away after she had calmed down some, the sun having finally set fully, only leaving behind the city lights that stained the air.
"Stupid Revengeā¦" She muttered, scowling at the scenery. Sai almost gasped at her words. So she meant Sasuke, not him? For once he felt truly happy.
Sakura turned towards Sai, smiling her bright smile that made Sai's stomach lurch. "Thanks for comforting me, Sai. No one else would understand like you would. Everyone else just asks useless questions."
Sakura stood, and offered her hand out to Sai. Sai stared at it blankly for a moment before Sakura laughed. "Do you want me to help you up?" she asked.
Sai blinked, before grasping her hand and allowing her to pull him up. Unlike how Sai had assumed, Sakura didn't let go once she had pulled him up, and led him down the stairs and into the streets of the city, insisting that he needed a tour of the city from someone who knew all the hotspots like her.
Not once did she let go of his hand.
