Addison Montgomery sat next to her ex husband in a daze as the entire of Seattle Grace Hospital listened to Christina Yang struggling to talk about her person.
Meredith Grey was dead. She'd fallen into the water during the ferry accident, and despite everyone's best efforts to revive her she had passed away that day. Derek Shepherd was broken. He blamed himself for Meredith's death, thinking that she hadn't swum on purpose.
'Derek Shepherd has a few words to say.' Christina desperately stepped down passing Derek the microphone. Derek stared at it for a second or two and rose to his feet. He walked slowly to the front of the chapel and turned to face the congregation. He caught sight of Ellis Grey and looked away feeling rage boil up inside him.
'Meredith Grey. An extraordinary woman, and a great surgeon with huge potential. She was a friend and a lover. Meredith was the love of my life. She…. She saved me. And I'm just…' Derek paused choking back tears. 'I'm sorry I couldn't do the same for her. She was 'dark and twisty' but that was one of her many strengths. She will never be forgotten. The world has lost a great surgeon, and a wonderful lady…' Derek broke down and was ushered back to his seat by Preston Burke, who sat on the other side of him.
The rest of the service was a blur. Addie couldn't take her eyes off Derek. When she had told him in the corridor that he couldn't fall apart because there was still hope, she hadn't known how close Meredith was to death. Now Derek was hurting and she didn't have a damn clue what she was gonna do about it.
Richard had decided that the wake was to take place at the hospital, so everyone headed back there. Addie and Derek rode in silence. When they arrived at the hospital Addison wearily opened the door and climbed out, and waited for Derek. He never got out. She leant in and put her hand gently on his arm and he dissolved into sobs. Addison climbed back into the car and closed the door. She waved at the driver to take them away as she pulled Derek to her and held him as he wept uncontrollably.
Over an hour later, Derek's sobbing began to slow. He looked up at Addison and her heart flipped. She mentally kicked herself. She really shouldn't be thinking like that about Derek of all people, especially now of all times.
'What... What do I do Addie?' Addison took a deep breath.
'You go home. You grieve and then you go back to work, and save lives. People need you Derek. It's.... It's what she would have wanted.' She watched Derek's face crumple before her and sighed.
'But how can I? It's.. This is my fault...'
This was going to be a long painful and difficult night.
