First Impression

Sam sat in the waiting area while Fiona's car received the finishing touches of the wax job Austin recommended. All she could think about was the dance later that night and meeting Nomad for the first time. At the same time she was nervous of what he would think of her. Part of her didn't want to go, but she owed it to him since she had put it off for so long. Letting out a sigh she decided to text him to see what he was up to. Hey, what are you up today?

Hearing what she thought was someones cell beep she turned her head toward the register, but she didn't see anyone but Austin sitting at the front desk on his computer. "I guess, it's just wishful thinking," she whispered to herself hoping he was near by. Shortly after she turned her attention away from the register, then received a reply. Nothing, exciting. Just sitting at work bored outta my mind. You?

Sam quickly wrote back, Bored running my step-mom's errands. Ugh!

A few minutes past and Austin got up and asked, "Who had the Jag?" Sam lifted her head up and raised her hand. "Alright, your car is ready to go." Sam walked up with her check ready to pay.

"So, how much do I owe you?" She asked.

"Well, we have a special going on this week that cuts your price in half on wax jobs. So, it looks like you only owe Twelve dollars and fifty cents." Smiling at her after sharing the good news. Sam looked up in shock.

"Oh, wow. That's not bad at all for a wash and wax." As she wrote out a check for the amount due Austin began to fill the dead air.

"So, are you going to the dance?" Taking a few seconds to finished writing she answered as she handed him the check.

"I'm not sure. I'm debating if I really want to or not. What about you?"

"Yep. I think you should. Do you have a date?"

"Sort of. It's complicated." If he only knew why.

"Oh, I see. It's one of those, huh?" Austin asked as he ran the check through the register. "Relationships can be a pain, for sure."

"I wouldn't know. I've never been in one." Feeling embarrassed. He must think I'm a loser like his friends. To her surprise he was very understanding.

"That's not a bad thing, trust me. Unless you really like someone it's a lot of work." Dating Shelby is like having a 2nd job. Sam cracked a smile after he said that. All she could think about was meeting Nomad and hopefully began a relationship with him.

"Thanks, I don't feel as bad, now," Austin nodded. Taking the receipt from his hand she was about to turn around and walk away when he stopped her.

"Wait a minute," he shouted. Sam stopped and turned around. "Were you at the park earlier today hitting softballs?" Sharing a smile with her.

"Um..yeah. Why?" She asked in confession.

"Yeah, I saw you hit that ball over the fence. That was pretty impressive. Who taught you to hit like that?" If only Shelby could play sports like that. Blushing from his compliment she replied with.

"I did. I play all the time on the weekends." Wonder why he's being friendly. Could I be wrong about him?

"Nice. How come you never tried out for the team at school?" Squinting his eyes.

"I don't know. I just do it for fun. I'm not very popular with most of the jocks, anyway." You being one of them.

"Popularity is overrated. I wouldn't worry about it."

"Thanks. Well, I better get going. Thanks for the advice. See ya around." Who knew. I guess, he's not who I thought he was. Sam left and drove away in Fiona's car while Austin analyzed his advice he passed on to her. Maybe, it's about time I take my own advice. This relationship with Shelby has gone on long enough.
