Our Blank World
Hey guys! This is my first fanfic so please keep that in mind while reading, but be sure to leave me some comments or reviews on anything (and everything) I can improve on.
I noticed that the backstory of no game no life only shows Shiro and Sora's meeting, so I decided to expand a bit.
Chapter 1
Sora's POV
The room was dark. The light from numerous screens illuminated the faces of the two gamer siblings, the icy-blue haired eleven year old girl and the red haired eighteen year old boy. Their hands flew across the keyboards, the mouses held in their hands moved skilfully as if it was an extension of the players themselves.
'This is all we have.' The world had abandoned us, in this room filled with controllers, computers, monitors and various cords and devices, the only things we have now are each other, this room. A small haven set aside this broken game that we call life.
It was seven years ago when we first met.
I had walked into the room with my new mother. I smiled as she told me stories, answering "Yes" or "No" when they wanted to hear it. I smiled not because I was happy, but because smiling seemed to make the others around me happy. There was a girl in the centre of the almost-bare room. She sat at a desk, glancing up at us as we walked in, her gold-red eyes dull with boredom, but the way she tracked their movements showed intelligence. When I looked in those eyes for the first time, I saw myself staring back for a second. I smiled still though, hoping to cheer up the blank-faced girl.
"You really are empty." She spoke.
My smile faded for a moment as those words seemingly pierced through my chest, hitting me in my heart. The person standing in front of me saw through the façade, the empty smile I kept to keep everyone happy. The girl interested me, the eyes filled with a bored intelligence that excited me. 'They need a challenge' I had thought. I was considered smart by many standards, I had skipped two grades of school and been praised as a prodigy, I thought that I could win any game.
"Would you like to play a game?" I asked, looking as the girl's disinterested eyes flicked up to me, possibly not expecting my proposal. She merely nodded as I sat down in front of her and waved goodbye to my new mother, who didn't say hello or goodbye to her daughter as she left the room."I challenge you to a game of chess!" I declared on that day, hoping to elicit any speech from her.
The girl sitting across from me tilted her head slightly, expecting some new IQ test or "Game" as all the people she had met so far had called it, yet this boy sat in front of her, asking her to play the game she had mastered since she was one year old. "I accept.." Were the quiet words she spoke, slightly interested as to what the boy in front of her could be thinking.
The game was obviously one-sided as the girl in front of me made every move possible to foil me, taking my pieces again and again, as if she understood every possible state of the board. When I was inevitably defeated, the girl turned to me. She looked at me with curiosity, maybe for the first time she was interested in the motives of a human,
"Why did you challenge me?" she said. I still remember the stories I heard of the many chess grandmasters she had defeated by the age of three, about how she had never lost a game.
"You looked like you needed some fun." And I smiled then, not to make her happy, but because I was happy, there was a tough new opponent to beat. The dull eyed girl looked slightly puzzled,
"Why are these games considered fun?" To her, games were only tools used to measure a person's intellect, not as a method of enjoyment. 'I wonder who's empty now?' I thought, looking at the girl who lived her life in boredom, being loved not even by her mother, but viewed as a machine or some kind of monster. I stood up, clearing the board and packing it away in a small cupboard tucked away in the corner, one of the only furnishings in the room besides the desk and the bed. I looked back over to the small figure sitting at the desk watching me, and I walked over.
"My name's Sora," I introduced myself, holding out my hand for her to take, "I'm your new brother." She eyed the hand I had extended towards her, looking then back up at me with those eyes of hers,
"I'm not sure about that." Her reply was curt, disregarding any attempt I made to become close to her. I lowered my hand at those words, taking them as a challenge. I walked off, having a clear goal in mind for the first time in my life.
Beat that girl
The sun streamed in through the room the next morning, waking me from my drowsy sleep. I was in an unfamiliar room, having moved in to live with my new mother because my father was so caught up with work that I had to be looked after by a nurse until I was old enough to take care of myself. I stood up out of my bed, remembering the small figure in the cold room down the hall I saw yesterday.
I got up, getting changed and ready, then heading out to the kitchen to get some breakfast. I ate silently, noticing that the girl had not come out to eat, 'Oh well' I thought. When I was ready to go, I set off down the street, determination showing in my eyes as I made my way towards the library to borrow some books on strategy and games, particularly chess, where I took them back home and shut myself in my room, studying and reading through the books and playing chess games against the computer.
It was around 2:00 in the afternoon, I had finished lunch and was once again sitting in my room, playing chess against the computer when I let out a satisfying "Yes!", as I defeated the hardest difficulty to play against. I slumped against the chair, contented, when I heard the door slowly creak open. Through the small gap in the door were the eyes of the little girl I met yesterday. As I made eye contact, she quickly shut the door and started walking down the hall,
"Wait!" I called out, placing a hand of the girl's shoulder. "How about we play another game?". She turned and followed me back into my room where we sat cross-legged in front of each other, the chess board already set between us.
"Why did you challenge me again?" She asked, "You should have already certified my intelligence level."
I grinned, "Well this time I thought that I might make it interesting."
"How so?" The girl's eyes looked up at me, her interest piqued
"I was thinking that maybe we could place a bet." The girl opposite me stirred, curious as to what I could offer.
"What do you suggest?" She asked quietly.
"One game. If you win, I'll stop bothering you and leave you alone, but if I win, you'll accept me as your brother." I wait to see her girl looked at me, her curiosity piqued now, she nodded.
"I accept."
I made the first move. The game went on for a while, I was more confident this time, I remembered little tricks and techniques I had learnt. The game noticeably different this time, more even with the little girl genius losing just as many pieces as I did, eventually ending in a stalemate.
"It seems this was a draw." The girl said softly, looking at the pieces displayed in the board. I smiled, my hard work hadn't gone to waste.
"What now?" I ask, referring to the bet we had placed. The girl shifted around, looking up at me slightly,
"I guess.. I could accept you as my brother," the girl replied, looking at me with happiness for the first time since I met her. I looked at her, surprised by her sudden acceptance of me.
"Well how about a reintroduction?" I asked, holding my hand out once more, repeating the scene yesterday, "My name's Sora, I'm your new brother." Shiro looked at my hand, this time taking it,
"Shiro.. I guess that makes me your new sister."
