The Moon Might Fall
"Finnick?"
I looked over at Annie She was laying down beside me on the dock, both of us letting our skin soak up the stars. I was surprised to see her eyes open and calm. Minutes earlier, I could have sworn she'd been screaming for her life, punching and kicking me when I tried to calm her down.
"What is it?" The look on her face was so strange as she tilted her face towards the sky.
"Nothing's wrong." She let out a little laugh. It was so natural that I almost pinched myself to see if I was dreaming. "But Finn, aren't they beautiful?"
"Aren't who beautiful?" She was staring intently at the stars. "The horses. The purple one, the green one, the blue one…" I wanted to scream at her that there were no horses in the sky, that horses don't come in those colours. Horses don't like war zones, or docks with crazy people on them or big seas of water. But she was still listing the colours, whispering them to herself. "Yellow, orange, red…" I bit my tongue and looked up at the starry sky.
There they were. Galloping around and around in the sky, every colour you could name. Their manes drifted off behind them, weaving in between the stars and behind the moon, in and out, in and out. Annie sat up suddenly, then waved furiously for me to follow. Slowly, I sat up too.
"I told you they were beautiful." She said softly. She dipped her feet into the water below.
"They are. But how-" I gazed up at the sky, but the horizon caught my attention. No nets and gates limiting where you could swim and boat without the Capitol's permission. No huge fleets waiting at attention. Just the moon hanging over the water, looking for the first time ever like it might fall at any second.
Annie just smiled at me, bright and unhaunted. She leaned her head on my shoulder. Her hair was so soft on my neck. I froze, which she laughed at.
"Finnick." She was still smiling. "I told you so." And then she kissed me.
And I knew I was dead.
