THE WORLD IS HOLLOW

He remembered everything.

He remembered the broken face, looming over him. The madness in one eye, the sanity in the other. The demented smile, the satisfied smirk. The crusted, reddened burns against the smooth and stubbled flesh.

He remembered the pain of the fists crashing down, the baseball bats hitting him.

He remembered how badly he'd struggled to hold it all in until finally he couldn't, until it had been too much. The flush of shame, of failure, of despair, that was somehow worse than the agony of his body.

He remembered breaking down, finally, when everything was too much for his body to bear. And then being held there by cruel, taunting voices. An eternity of shattering.

He remembered blacking out when they eventually left him alone.

And he did not forget.
