Two Year's Eve

Hello folks on the last day ever…of 2008. This is a short feature that goes in place of another New Year's fic I had in mind but decided to do later. Well, hope you enjoy it.

They sat on the balcony, overlooking the snow covered city. In the background, the sounds of Dick Clark's New Year's Celebration went on from the TV in the office. Alan Shore and Denny Crane set in their usual chairs smoking their usual Cigars. The day, however, was a special day in that it was the last day of the year. In just a few minutes, it would be a new year. Alan thought of this as he took a puff from his Stogie and turned to Denny.

"So, it's a new year…well, almost a new year." Alan told his friend.

"Dang right." Denny replied, swirling his scotch around in the glass. "You know, I'd have to say. A heck of a lot of things went on during the past 364 days."

"Hasn't it?" Alan agreed.

"Uh-huh. Of course, there is the biggest event of all." Denny said.

"That's right." Alan said

"Barack Obama's gain of Presidency!" Alan said proudly.

"The Beijing Olympics" Denny said at the same time as Alan in an equal tone of voice. They stopped and looked at each other.

"Denny, be reasonable." Alan said, brows raised. "You would take the Beijing Olympics over the nation's first ever Black President?" Alan stopped when he heard Denny chuckling.

"Kidding. Kidding." He said. Alan smiled a little and sipped a little from his glass.

"It's too bad we couldn't go down to Time's Square to see the ball drop." Denny said, staring ahead at the Boston skyline.

"Yeah. Can you believe Paul had planned a whole trip for us to go up there, only to have a big "something" to come up?" Alan asked, a hint of disgust in his voice. He had always wanted to see the ball drop up close. Seeing it on Denny's HD Tv was not enough for him. But, you make do with what you have.

"Alan. Denny Crane just had an idea!" Denny exclaimed suddenly.

"You want me to pack the car?" Alan said sarcastically, half hoping he was right.

"No. Sorry, kiddo. I just thought we could just…dance together. The first one of the New Year." Denny said. Alan chuckled.

"Are you sure?" Alan said.

"Yeah. Unless, of course, you think have a problem touching a man's hands." Denny challenged. Alan loved when he challenged him.

"Ok. I'll take it." Alan said. Not a minute after he said this passed when the countdown began.

"Ready, pal?" Denny asked.

"Always." Alan returned. They stood up, prepared to dance.

10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3..2..1..

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!" they both shouted along with the TV. As the strains of Auld Lang Syne started, the two started to dance a steady waltz, Denny leading. This by no means implied that they had "that" sort of relationship together but it meant that their friendship was one that they hope would last into the next year and the year after that and the year after that…

Well, I hope you've enjoyed that short little story. Originally, it was going to be a New Year's Party story but I never got around to doing it. This story may seem rushed for I was trying to get it up close to the start of the new year. Everyone, let all have a wonderful year full of positivity and joy!
