"Pepper, I have to go." Tony announced, his voice quiet and dreading. He didn't want to leave his fair maiden; he left her too often these days. With the fall of Loki came the rise of black-hearted criminals, eager to test the Avengers' strength.

The strawberry-haired woman sauntered towards him on white heels, her cherry lips etching into a frown. She nodded silently, acknowledging that her love would be leaving yet again. Sadly, Pepper cradled his head in her arms, a final goodbye. "Be safe, Tony. I love you." She whispered, planting a kiss on his head.

And with that, the raven-haired male stood, smiling weakly at his baby before turning on his heel and trekking to where he would apply that crimson and gold suit of iron to his body and thrust himself into the air.

Pepper was alone. Not just physically, but mentally. She wanted Tony to stay with her. She wanted nothing but her, Tony, and their peaceful voices as they talked about their love for each other. Why must these walls keep coming between her and him? Her oceanic blue eyes cast downwards, deep sorrow and concern. All Virginia wanted was one thing: Her one love. She knew Tony was a different man after Afghanistan; he didn't want fame. Pepper knew he was thinking the same things as her. The woman's eyes darted to a stack of paper on the glass table before her. Did working really soothe her? The irises left the signature-less papers as long, lean legs padded up the equally lengthy stairs. Had it been years since Tony left? Months? Days? Hours? Minutes? She didn't know anymore.

Work had been an excuse. An excuse, to, perhaps, remind herself that as long as she stayed busy she wouldn't have time to feel blue. A fake escape, an empty promise. This answering four-hundred emails a day behavior is what killed her inside. How sometimes, she would disregard Tony like he were an animal. Yet, Tony did the same to her when he was down in his 'lab' tinkering with his toys. But unlike her, Tony would pay attention to you and pause his work if asked to do so. Pepper would leave you hanging until she was done- and most of the time, her papers were not through until about two in the morning. And that's what dragged her to the bottom of the abyss that held her down. Working until your eyes gave up on you; all for the promise of days full of joy. She regreted those days, those days where she could have been with Tony, but yet she was drowning in paperwork.

And one day, it could all vanish.

Pepper would have focused on all of her work, and not Tony. And then, in the blink of an eye, she would loose her lover. She would loose those strong arms that pulled her close to a warm body and held her close.

The woman shook these angry thoughts from her mind, shaken by them. She pulled on one of Tony's old shirts, comforted by the fragrance. With a sigh, Pepper curled into the sheets of her bed. There was a body missing next to her tonight. There were lips missing lips tonight. Arms missing arms. Bodies missing bodies. No one was here to soothe her when she had nightmares. Pepper listened to the raging storm outside, adjacent to her mind. A tear slipped down her cheek, followed by many others.

A/N: Ello! So, first fanfiction on Pepperony...how'd I do? This was based off of an RP with a friend. The songs that inspired this were probably Melcanholy Astronautic Man, One Love, Edge Of Glory, and some others. Disclaimer: I don't own Marvel or any characters associated with it. If I did we'd have a lot of Pepperony babies... c:

Constructive critisism is appreciated! Review what you thought~
