Sarah's thoughts while lying in the SGC infirmary after Osiris was removed.
Bright in the Dullness
Her eyes wide and set, she stared at the ceiling with a single-minded purpose.
To forget.
To reach within the abyss of her mind and draw a complete blank.
To close her eyes and see less images than she did when they were open.
To disregard all of what she had stored in her memory as a part of a bad 12am horror movie she'd dozed off in.
To try and recall what it felt like to wonder about the mysteries of supposed long dead worlds of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, heartless conquests and bloodied battlefields.
To look into the eyes of one of her best friends and not see the desperation he'd once felt as he sought her buried soul.
Her fingers scrunched around the sheets of the starchy infirmary blankets as a white-hot wave of pain penetrated her skull. The memories were like firecrackers inside her head - she only hoped that they would burst once and then fizzle away into a trail of darkness.
Vaguely, she could hear the rustling of the nurses as they went around their daily business but they weren't as interesting as the plain slab of grey ceiling on which her stare was focused. She'd never thought she'd say this, but its shade was amazingly beautiful in its complete dullness; it was just there, sitting, doing nothing extraordinary or strange. Just doing its small bit to lend a hand and watching the world go by. It was one of those things that were elegant in its simplicity, if only one could look at it from the same perspective as she was at that moment.
For the first time in years, she twitched a smile to her lips - in control of her own face muscles and completely of her own accord. She smiled not because of triumph or because she felt powerful enough to bend the galaxy to her own selfish will.
She smiled because a slab of concrete had somehow managed to bring her comfort.
Uh...this came to me at 11.30pm last night. Thanks for reading. : )
