"I'll bet you 5 galleons the two will get married," whispered a seventh year Hufflepuff as Harry and Hermione walked by laughing.
This wasn't the first time the pair had been spoken of this way, never mind the fact that each had their respective partners. Harry and Ginny were obviously an item as were Ron and Hermione. It didn't matter what you told them though; they'd still insist the two were a match made in Heaven. To this, Harry would laugh, "More like a match made in Hell."
"But don't you think she's pretty?" they would demand hungrily.
"Of course I think she's pretty. Hermione's stunning," he'd roll his eyes at whatever naïve fool had dared to ask this time. This would add fuel to the fire. Did you hear? Harry—yes, the Harry Potter—thinks Hermione Granger is stunning! What did they expect him to think? Hermione was his best friend. How could he not notice her beauty?
"But don't you think that he's just so heroic?" a girl who sigh dreamily to Hermione.
"I've witnessed his heroism firsthand. I can assure you that I know he's heroic," she'd reply drily. The rumors thrived off of this simple statement. Hermione must fancy him! She said that he's heroic. Only someone who had lived under a rock since 1981 could claim that they didn't think he was heroic. He was considered a hero since the age of one. Harry had done actual heroic things since she's known him. It'd be a lie to say he didn't have somewhat of a "hero complex" as she dubbed it.
"How long have you known each other?" they would all inquire greedily.
"Since first year," he'd answer absentmindedly as he worked on his Charms essay. Soon everyone would be in giggles of joy. They obviously fancy each other. You can't be 'just friends' with someone for that long. It's impossible. He laughed and shook his head. They always forgot there was Ron, too. Besides, he and Hermione weren't just friends.
"Halloween 1981," she would reply instantly out of habit. She was so used to answering the question by now that she didn't even think about it. She just told them the exact day their little trio was formed. Of course, she thought in annoyance, no one asks about Ron or any Weasley for that matter. She remembers the exact day. She must fancy Potter. The girl would twitter about the subject while Hermione read and glared at the nuisances occasionally for distracting her.
"Did she really cry after the First Task?" they'd ask nosily.
He sighed,"Well, yes, I nearly died. It caused an emotional reaction that most refer to as crying." She cried! She didn't cry for Krum, and they were together, like officially. She also had known him longer than Krum, not that they thought about this factor unless it added to their insane theory of love between the two.
"Did you really hug him?" they'd question even though they had clearly seen Hermione wrap her arms around Harry just moments before.
"That's what we call it when we wrap our arms around others in a form of affection," she would say primly as she took a seat in Arithmacy. They fancy each other; it's certain. Boys and girls don't just hug if they don't fancy each other. So apparently she now fancied Sirius, Ron, Fred, George, and many others on top of Harry.
"Do you love her?"
He would sigh and snap as he tried to pay attention to Slughorn, "Yes, I bloody love her." This had them in hysterics.
"Do you love him?"
"Isn't it obvious I do?" she ask rhetorically in response. They were positively screaming by now.
But the part no one ever listened to was that they did love each other like a brother and sister. They knew each other in and out and were side by side through thick and thin. That was just the way the liked it.
