"Ryou!"
I sighed, inconspicuously glancing at the clock on the wall. She was right on cue. Every day she appeared at the same exact time. Thankfully, she appeared at 12:00, the time people were eating lunch and the stadium was empty. I was sitting in the corner, my Pokémon all out and eating their Pokémon food as I ate my sandwich.
She came up to me, chipper as always. She was always grinning, I noticed. Even though she already defeated me without even batting an eyelash months ago, she would always come back…every day at lunch time.
"Hikari…" I said slowly, "why are you here…again?"
"Because I'm sure it gets lonely," she replied, sitting next to me. I gave her a strange look and she rolled her eyes at me playfully. "You know, sitting here all day waiting for someone to come through those doors…then you just have to fight. It must get lonely."
"I'm used to it," I shrugged, biting into my sandwich again.
"Yeah," she scoffed. "Sure."
Honestly, I looked forward to seeing Hikari. Her bright blue eyes were always sparkling in silent laughter, her skin looked so enticingly soft and fragile, and her smile could even make my firm heart waver with selfish want. When I first met her, marching through the doors and whooping my ass faster than you could say "shit", I had hated her. But then she started coming ever day and eventually I grew to tolerate her…then that turned to like, and eventually, love. Probably. I've never been in love before so I didn't know what it felt like. But if anything felt like love, this would be it.
"Wanna battle?" I suddenly asked. She looked at me.
"No."
"Oh…" I said, biting my sandwich again. She smiled at me.
"I want to talk."
"Oh," I said again, swallowing the rest of my lunch then sipping my coffee. "About what?"
"You. Tell me about you," her eyes were glittering more than usual. I couldn't resist those eyes, so I obliged her silent plea.
"Um…well, I love bug type Pokémon, 'cause when I was eight a butterfree saved me from an old man trying to kidnap me. It was wild one too…flew right off afterwards. I was kind of confused, but then when the shock wore off I realized what had happened and well, ever since then I've loved bug type."
"Bug bug bug," Hikari said. "It's all you talk about. I want to know about you, not the bugs."
"Nothing much to me. I had a normal life," I shrugged, sipping my drink again. "You?"
"The usual."
My eyebrow quirked. "And what are your standards for 'usual'?"
"My mom was a famous pokémon contestant. My dad…well, I never knew my dad. Mom never talks about him so I don't know if he's alive or not," she shrugged carelessly, but I saw hurt in her eyes. "I don't care."
"I see," I said, putting my coffee down. I looked at the clock again. "Hmm, well, you should leave, the stadium is opening."
"Oh right," she jumped to her feet and I stood as well, stuffing my food in a bag and tossing it before returning my pokémon and putting their bowls away. Hikari watched me do this in silence, and somehow that perturbed me.
"Well, bye," I said ruder than intended. She flashed me a smile.
"Bye."
She pressed warm lips to mine; it was only for a brief moment, so fleeting that when she pulled away I didn't even remember what it felt like. But I knew it was a kiss. I gawked at her and she giggled, waving before rushing out, leaving me standing in the middle of the stadium like an idiot. I snapped out of it when a boy entered nervously, obviously not too eager for battle.
I heaved a sigh. I turned to him, but in the back of my mind, I began to think of what I should say when she came again tomorrow.
