"Just call her, god dammit! It's not that hard!"
Will swallowed and looked at the phone in his hand. Twelve digits. That's all that stood between him and possible humiliation. Sighing, he plunked out the first four. Tunny stood nearby, making sure Will actually accomplished the task at hand.
As he went to finish the series of numbers there was a loud CRASH!
"Jimmy, what the fuck was that?"
Tunny got up to investigate but not before giving Will the 'you better do it' look. Watching as his best friend disappeared into the kitchen, Will racked his brain for a way out of this. Looking back at the phone, he realized he was he only needed three more numbers. Reluctantly, in a sudden rush to get it over with, he pushed the buttons, the last one being the call button. He pressed the phone against his face and, silently, listened to the tone that buzzed in his ear.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
No one answered.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
Will looked back at the way his friend had left. Maybe Tunny wouldn't notice if he just hung up.
Ring! Ring! Ri-
"Hello?"
Will stuttered. "Oh! Hi! I d-din't mean t-to interrupt a-anything?"
"Will?"
"Yeah. Hey, Heather."
The voice on the other line didn't respond immediately. Will thought she had hung up until he heard a giggle that could only belong to a certain one year old.
"Come on, Mark. Say hi!"
Will only heard mumbling and occasional giggles but it was enough.
"Hey baby. How are you?" Will didn't realize he was talking in baby talk.
More giggles and mumbling acted as a response to his question. A smile spread across Will's face.
"Just thought you'd want to hear his voice." It was Heather again.
"Thanks. It just made my day."
No one spoke for what seemed like forever. Will could feel his palms beginning to sweat. They always did that when he was nervous.
Deciding to say what he needed to say, Will asked, "Heather?"
"Yeah?"
"Happy Mothers Day."
"So you remembered to call?"
The response threw Will off but he could identify the sarcasm in her voice.
He forced a small laugh. "Yeah."
"Well, thanks. It means a lot."
"No problem."
"I gotta go change Mark's diaper. It was really nice talking to you, Will."
"You too."
"Maybe one of these days I can send Mark over to your place, IF Jimmy's not there."
Will smiled. "I would love that."
"Okay. Cool."
"Now, don't you have a diaper to change?"
He heard laughter on the other end. "I'll talk to you later."
"Okay."
"Bye!"
"Bye!"
'Click!'
"Nice job, buddy." Will turned to see Johnny and Tunny behind him with approving looks on their faces. He smiled at them as he placed the phone back on the table.
"Now was that so hard?" Tunny mocked as he playfully punched him in the shoulder.
Will laughed. "Not at all."
The End
Please comment & review. And happy Mothers Day to everyone. :)
