Author's Note:
Hey… it's my first fanfic… I felt like I should do something for L's birthday, so here it is. I really couldn't think of anything so I just threw something together. So it's probably really sucky. If you would please give me some criticism and tell me what to work on, I will be extremely grateful (and be as harsh as you like, I'm not a pansy or anything ). Anyways, Happy Birthday to L!
Disclaimer: I am not Tsugumi Ohba or Takeshi Obata; therefore, I do not own Death Note.
Ryuzaki sits by himself looking out the window. The raindrops create an uneven rhythm on the roof. It reminds him of the first day he came to the orphanage. It had been raining then, too.
Perhaps the rain is an omen of bad luck, he muses to himself. He does not regret going to Wammy's or meeting Watari, but he does remember how his world came crashing down when his parents passed. The rain always reminds Ryuzaki of them, and how he'll never see them again.
The cake in his hand reminds him of why he is here. It is the 31st of October, 2004. It is also his birthday.
Ryuzaki sighs to himself inwardly. His birthday. He hasn't told anyone, though. Even the slightest bit of personal information could give a tiny hint to his identity.
He pulls his knees closer. It makes him feel a bit lonely.
Ryuzaki can't remember the last time he celebrated his birthday. He takes a bite of cake. Every year he takes time to reflect. But he hasn't really had a real party, with balloons and presents and the sort. There hasn't been a year when he has spent his birthday with a friend. Besides Watari, anyways. But he was more like a father. Ryuzaki wonders what it would be like if he had a real party, with real friends. He could ask Light-kun to celebrate with him, but he was most likely Kira and wanted to murder him. Amane-san had left yesterday after he released her from investigation. So he was alone. Like last year.
Ryuzaki sighs and takes another bite of cake. He needs to get back to the investigation soon. With Higuchi's capture, there was a lot of evidence to be looked over. And since the 13-day rule cleared both Light-kun and Misa-san, he needs to start finding new leads.
He gets up out of his seat and starts toward the exit when a blinking on his laptop stops him. It's an IM… from Misa.
kawaiirockerchick40: Hi Ryuzaki!

kawaiirockerchick40: u shud have at least told me & lite so we cud throw u a party b4 misa left!
Anonymous: That's quite alright, Amane-san. I'm sure you'd have more fun at a Halloween event elsewhere.
kawaiirockerchick40: im still mad u.
Anonymous: My apologies, Amane-san. I'll be sure to inform you next year.
kawaiirockerchick40: rly? Good. U shudnt spend so much time alone by urself. Itll make u go crzy.

Four days later, Misa finds something in the forest that awakens the second Kira.
Five days later, Ryuzaki eats cake for the very last time.
A year later, Kira and second Kira celebrate the passing of their greatest adversary. Misa's invitation to Ryuzaki's birthday party is completely forgotten.
…It was his birthday that day. His last birthday.
