Author's note: This is a fan fiction for the video game Nier. More specifically, it is an alternate version of the storyline from the DLC, where the shade child Kalil and the robot P-33 escape from their battle with Nier alive. This is the story of their adventures.\

Shouts. Pounding feet. The clash of swords and the sounds of dying shades. Running. His mother's face. Then, nothingness. Black despair as he hears his mother distracting the humans. No! Mom! Don't leave me! Suddenly, Kalil jerked awake. He sat upright, struggling to remember where he was. Then it came to him. He and P-33 had been attacked. By a man with a mask and a floating book. Beepy had...he quickly looked to his left and saw the massive robot lying there, his metal wings sheared to stubs. The shade breathed a sigh of relief. They had escaped. He and Beepy were alive, and in the outside world once again.

Kalil stood shakily, feeling unsteady after their long flight from the factory where the battle had taken place. He shook his head to clear his thought5s, then walked over to P-33's side and nudged him with one shadowy toe. "Beepy?" he said in his guttural shade language, his voice full of concern. "Are you alright?" For a moment, the robot didn't stir, and Kalil felt panic seize him, knocking the air from his lungs. No...he can't be. Not again, please! Then the robot twitched, and Kalil could breathe again.

"Ka-ka-kalil?" P-33 stuttered. "We are safe-afe-afe?" The young shade nodded. "Yeah, Beepy. We're safe. You flew us out of the factory! It was amazing!" He jumped and made hand gestures as he spoke, feeling more comfortable now that he knew his friend was alive and well. Okay, maybe not well. P-33's voice-box seemed to be shorting out. "Are we in the out-out-out-outside world-ld-ld?" P-33 asked. He seemed as eager as a robot could be for an answer. Kalil nodded again. "Yeah! It's awesome, isn't it? Look up there!" he pointed to the clouds above, which obscured the sun. "That's the sky! Isn't it cool?!" P-33 turned his great metal head upwards. "Sk-sk-sk-sky. An endless empty space above the earth, containing the sun and cloud-oud-oud-ouds."

Kalil looked at his friend and guardian with concern. "Your voice-box must be malfunctioning again. But...how will we get replacement parts for you out here?" He suddenly realized he hadn't even bothered to find out where 'here' was. He looked around. They seemed to be on the border of a large, sandy expanse of land. "A desert!" Kalil cried out. "We're in a desert!" P-33 looked back down to earth. "Desert? What is a des-es-es-es-es-esert?" Kalil hopped onto his friends foot and climbed up his metal legs, then swung from his right arm to get onto the small platform on top of the automaton. I'll tell you about it while we're walking, okay, Beepy? But right now, we have to start moving." P-33 complied and began trudging along the sands, patiently listening to Kalil as he explained the wonders of the desert and the outside world as a whole.
